• @nick_h. TBH I didn't even look at the bike I just thought the whole story was a bit grotesque

I guess I'm from the polar opposite end of the bike spectrum- collect and restore classic bikes and recycle old ones for charity, don't understand how people find worth in something they have invested only money in

god I sound like a miserable cunt

Conversely I have respect for the skill that goes into building a bike by hand and I guess someone has to buy them

  • There's no limit to how much rich people will pay for tasteless customisation of something which was already hyper-expensive. All those megayachts with bar stools upholstered with whale foreskin. I used to know a trader who spent 20k on a custom dining room table but refused to help his mother when she was facing eviction because she couldn't pay her rent. A few years after that he was in all the papers for standing on the breasts of a female employee in the dealing room.

  • don't understand how people find worth in something they have invested only money in

Dunno man. I had a well paid job once. Bought some cool shit. Didn’t mind it at all.

  • god I sound like a miserable cunt

    Welcome home, friend.

  • collect and restore classic bikes

If people didn't find worth in something they have invested only money in, you'd have nothing to collect and restore.

  • I guess I'm from the polar opposite end of the bike spectrum- collect and restore classic bikes

Putting together a new custom bike is as much a personal curatorial investment as restoring an old one. You're only the polar opposite on the temporal scale, in all other respects you are the same.
