Like you say, probably wasn't going to take him anyway. He didn't get any minutes in those Nations League games after his call up.

Basically the Sun and a few others got wind of him betting at a previous club and ran it this week.
Whether or not he's guilty, it's perfect timing for squad choice. As said above, it's almost certainly not the sole reason he's not in the squad but it might have been the deciding factor between him and Wilson.
Fingers crossed we don't have any penalty shootouts :D
