Following a badly sprained medial collateral ligament I was given a BioSkin knee brace by a physio. It's very lightweight neoprene/lycra with a double-hinged metal brace on both sides. I wear it to prevent any crash forcing my knee to bend inwards (towards my other leg) as a result of any remaining weakness in my MCL. Interesting to hear concerns from @skinny but I'd guess that level of bracing has enough flexibility not to simply transfer force elsewhere.
