  • Subscribed having just bought a full skimo set. Not done skimo before but makes sense now.

  • Wanna buy some roller skis for the summer? :D

  • ^ It's the time to book Lech now surely?

  • Got a trip booked

  • Ha could be tempted next year!
First aim is a skimo race before snows gone next year.

  • I ruptured my ACL running out of talent earlier this year, my physio says to wear a brace on that leg if I ski - I know nothing about these things, does anyone on this thread know what’s good and what’s not?

  • This probably isn't helpful but might be worth a shot.

When I ruptured my ACL in Switzerland the medical centre in Zermatt gave me a Gibaud brand knee support. It's one with straps on the front and back and has a cutout for your patella. Metal braces on the sides too.

When I got back to the UK, my knee surgeon said that Gibaud brand are his favourite to recommend.

Can't find many for sale in the UK though....sorry. have you got a trip coming up? You'd be very welcome to have mine...I don't need it any more.

  • Although I've got chunky legs and my one is 4xl so might not be right for you...welcome to try though!

  • Thanks- not sure that I’m 4XL, but if I can find some details I’ll confirm that.

This is the exact one I have. Was intended for immobilisation but I'd happily ski in it and the metal struts and hinge are pretty robust.

  • How good is your physio?
Have you seen a musculoskeletal specialist?
    Have you strengthened it?

If you brace your knee and have a bad crash, you could just fuck your hip as the force will transfer to another part of the leg.

  • I think the theory is that it's better to protect your compromised joint and accept that risk.

I have heard a lot of contradicting opinions though.

  • Hence saying see a specialist.

There are great physios out there, but having been through the injuries i have, I've learnt that an expert musculoskeletal doctor is very useful.

  • Hence saying see a specialist.

I meant that opinion is split among specialists. My particular knee surgeon is pro preventative knee supports. Others are not.

  • Following a badly sprained medial collateral ligament I was given a BioSkin knee brace by a physio. It's very lightweight neoprene/lycra with a double-hinged metal brace on both sides. I wear it to prevent any crash forcing my knee to bend inwards (towards my other leg) as a result of any remaining weakness in my MCL. Interesting to hear concerns from @skinny but I'd guess that level of bracing has enough flexibility not to simply transfer force elsewhere.

  • Take up snowboarding and save the knees for cycling. Skiing trashes knees and braces will only help up to a point.

  • Snowboarding is also terrible for knees, especially the back one!

  • An anecdote rather than a statistic but... I don't know any snowboarders with busted knees but a good proportion of skiers have done either an ACL, MCL or both!

I thought it was generally accepted that snowboarders break their wrists, skiers their knees.

  • I thought this was a popular myth that isn't backed up in data but who knows!

Reminds me of the running is bad for your knees myth.

  • Skiing may be worse for ligaments, but I think snowboarding is worse for cartilage. (Also anecdata)
Skimo is the real danger though. Often done in terrible conditions, on ridiculous skis that snap if you look at them the wrong way, with bindings that don't release reliably and wearing no more than a road cyclist.

  • I think pelvic injuries might be a feature of snowboarding too. I know one who dislocated (?) The cartilage joint at the bottom of his pelvis by landing sideways on his hip after a jump.

Frankly the idea of being irreversibly strapped to a plank gives me the jibblies, but I always have my ski bindings set pretty light anyway.

  • Sounds awesome!

  • I think we can all agree

    Fuck skimo.
