  • Today little project was new(ish) wheels for the Midnight Special.
Scored some Mavic elite all road+ 650b wheels on evilbay and Liz had already got me some WTB horizons. The wheels came taped, I found some valves in the bottom of the parts bin and after a little time and a lot of thumbs the tyres were on. They blew straight up with the track pump. So there was no need for me to drag the compressor out of the corner and find the hose and the inflator. Wish I’d known that before I dragged it out, spent time looking for the hose and the inflator, but hey.
I’ll pop out tomorrow to get some more sealant as the bottle on the shelf seems to be full of jelly. I’m sure it was liquid when I put there 3 years ago.
Anyway I’m happy and will swap over the discs and block tomorrow as well. Then a test ride.

  • Summat wrong there. Tyres really fat at the top and skinny at the bottom;)

  • That’s the allroad+ thing. They come up between 60mm and 25mm depending on which bit of the tyre you have on the road…or…could be I’m shit at taking photos…

  • I’ve decided on some for the chop.

    Trek 8000 ‘90’s MTB
    Trek Domane 4.3 (58)
    Raleigh ESQ
I’ll have to dig them out and do an ad

  • Cool Midnight Special, and like the direction you're going with the 650b wheels

  • Cheers, Liz did a fab job having it built for me, despite it being in the component drought of 2021/22.
For my shame these are the third set of wheels for it.
    622x25 with 40mm gravel tyres
    622x19 with 28mm road tyres
    584x25 with 47mm road+ tyres
There are another pair of 584x30 with 2.2 knobblies winging their way to me to try soon.
    I really do have issues don’t I!

  • Test fitting Liz’s cheap skate (pod sac) luggage set. I think it’ll do just fine. I still need to tape the frame and fit the fork cages and sacks, but it should mean Liz can carry the day ride stuff for our trips while I can the heavier bits. And the best bit? It came in at under £70 all in, result.

  • Well I finally got a chance to get some goop in the tyres and change over the rotors and cassette.
I won’t bore you with the process as it went without a hitch. No spills, leaks or squirts. Result!
Moving across the rotors and cassette was also a snap, once I’d found my chainwhip pliers anyway.
Once I was done I went for a spin around the block. 5miles of shitty roads full of mud. I didn’t bother taking pump, because confidence… I didn’t need one, it was just fine and rides smooth.
Anyway has some pics, I think it looks aces.
Oh and the toe overlap is no more.

  • Looks good. Dibs when you decide to sell it ;-)

  • Liz would hunt us both down :D

  • Just picked up a Mollymawk bar to try on the wankster, at £5 it would be rude not to.
    Pictures to follow…

  • Well I’ve fitted the Molly Mawk’s and been for a spin around the village. I’m not going to lie they are kind of nice. Loads of places to put your hands, which I’m quite surprised at.
I also fitted the DX 647 pedals I got from @BareNecessities and they are fine and dandy for what I need, cheers fella. Now to sort out a way of mounting the pizza rack to the wheel nuts (I have a plan) and then I think I’ll paint it.

  • I’ve just propped the Pizza rack against it, I didn’t have enough hands to get a pic. But I t’s too much. I think a trip to stainsbury’s for one of their basket racks is in order.

  • What's the hoopy thing at the back of the saddle?

  • It's for when you're playing Rollerball.

  • Haha! Beat me to it!

  • It’s an anti sway bar for a Burra Burra seat pack
