A couple can both earn £49,999 and get child benefit, a family with one working parent earning £50,000 doesn’t.
Not quite true.
At £50k you get 100% of CB.
At £51k you get 90% of CB.
At £52k you get 80% of CB.
...
At £60k you get 0% of CB.It's responsible for the blip in marginal tax rates between £50k and £60k here (first one I found on an image search):
More kids and that blip gets bigger and bigger (in £ terms).
It's also claimed back via self assessment too, and that prompts me to put in charitable donations, which means I only end up paying back ~30% of CB.
Many people also claim CB despite having to pay it all back as it covers the NI payments for a non-working parent.

🤔 Gov has two easy levers for wage inflation: public sector pay and minimum wage. There doesn't seem to be much appetite for pulling these though.

Seriously? Neither of us is close that level and we assumed we were well over claiming level. How much per month is it?

No, sorry, see up there ^^^
As usual I know enough about a subject to enter into early conversation but not to stand scrutiny.

£21.80 per week for one child, £14.45 for others. You can get it backdated up to 3 months.

I thought child benefit was paid and you actively had to refuse it if you didn't want to claim? A sort of "op out" system
-

Speaking to my partner, we is me and she has been getting it paid to her for the last 9 years. I'd assumed we wouldn't qualify.
-
• #2285
I wonder what she spent it on?

This is exactly what I thought your next post would be because it's essentially what mine would be except I kinda already knew it in the back of my mind.

I don't understand why this has been leaked. The whip should be sacked for washing dirty laundry in public. It's her job to bully, persuade or bribe MPs to vote for the party line. Being unable to deal with a lightweight like Williamson and squealing to the boss and the press, suggests sheer incompetence.

Not going to disagree with the overall assessment, but imo that is hardly threatening and abusive.
As it's all in text and we have no context I think it's hard to call exactly what is going on.
I may be biased, as my opinion of those in the tory whips office is pretty low.

She was pinged by RS.

Even the most toxic of managers I've had the displeasure to work for wouldn't swear at me in WhatsApp messages as they knew the score.
If I start messaging my colleagues in other depts in the same manner as Williamson I'd expect to be sacked for gross misconduct within days.
What's good about it being brought into the public eye is it further shows that our Government is dysfunctional as a workplace & change is much needed.

The biggest nursing strike in NHS history is set to take place before Christmas after union officials said that “large swathes of the country” had voted for industrial action.
Fast forward to cabinet ministers trashing nurses as enemies of the people

Just realised I missed the first set of messages in that thread. My bad.
Yeah.... not a great look.

Because the tory party is a sack full of rats

Agreed.. The decline and fall of the Tory party.

She was the chief whip. It was her job to send the bullying messages.

That makes it ok then. 🤦♂️

There is no moral equivalence here. The chief whip's job is to keep the sheep in line.
I agree, seems nuts.
The tax system is full of weird shit like this.
A couple can both earn £49,999 and get child benefit, a family with one working parent earning £50,000 doesn’t.
