  • Wow, they are lovely!!

Two things I learnt from your post, spiders are expensive and there is a spider shop website - amazing!!!

I would love one but my wife would not.

Edit: there are some funky looking specimens on the spider shop website

The website is great, I love the disposition grading from docile upwards towards horrific, hellish and these that have 'knobs' as their disposition:

It’s at this point I should be writing something nice about this species, or if I can’t do that at least something positive. Though after many near misses packing them and chasing them across desks I have decided I just don’t like them, they are my spider kryptonite. They are your standard 15cm of pure hate from Africa with particular potent venom, so not suitable for novice keepers or anyone with any common sense.

  • Thank you.yeah the descriptions makes me giggle sometimes on their website, very funny people haha

Spiders are much more scary than people think, they are less dangerous than my crazy jack russell!

Yeah, banging. Disappointing lack of vocals when we saw them live many years ago.

  • I’m going to tell my youngest daughter :) because she used to have night terrors about housespiders .

In 2005 without knowing what might turn up with London zoo keepers to her school (she was 6) as we walked to school that morning I said I’d give her £5 to hold a spider. And she held a beautiful pink toed (edit) tarantula and her class was like wow. She said it tickled :) and was very docile

It cured her night terrors she marvelled at how beautiful that tarantula was, became the coolest kid in her class, took her £5 note as soon as I got home,

  • Not a fan of house spiders myself haha, think thats how i got into spiders tbf, had a visit from london zoo when i was in school too. Cool pets, Easy to care for and they are cheap to keep

  • I’ve always been fascinated by spiders.. my aunt had loads of tarantulas ( not pets, wild) in her basement/ garage, ironically near Taranto, Puglia.

edit; daughter just replied saying she would hold all three for £15

  • How much looking after do they need, like, if you go away for a weekend do you need a spider sitter?

  • Can leave em with no food for like 6 months and they still would be alright, dont need much attention

  • Well, hello ladies...

  • Moulted yesterday

  • Like she's had a fresh coat of paint.
    Lovely

  • Wow, do they do anything with the old exoskeleton?

  • Do house spiders moult too? There was one in the hall, pretty big robust 'crunchy' looking (not delicate). I feel like I made a connection with it as it was inside a shoe I put on with bare feet and we were both rather surprised. Anyway about a month after the shoe incident, I saw it in the corner of the room, lifeless. Is it possible it moulted and is still hanging out in the shoe rack? I had been wondering how long those kind of spiders live for.

  • AFAIK, all spiders moult.

Flashback to an incident where I was child and my Dad teased me by dangling the discarded skin of a very large house spider over his mouth before a leg broke off and it fell in. The stuff of nightmares to me at the time!

  • Ah good to know. I shall continue to check shoes before I put them on then! Perhaps it is still hanging out somewhere.

  • That is simultaneously hilarious and terrifying.
