• I don't know a lot about dogs (apart from our poodle) but Ada looks really friendly, just curious, what breed?

  • Just had to adopt Sybil from my Mother-in-Law, challenging.

  • Do people play fetch in the dark?

Yep, we do, every night. We have an orbiloc light on his collar, a glow in the dark Chuck-it ball and my super powerful LEDLENSER headtorch. The only problem we have is this one guy who insists on walking his Alsatian with zero lights who tends to sneak up on us, for reasons unknown border terriers and Alsatians are sworn enemies.

  • What are you getting?

It's been hard work. My idea that half term would be a great time to get a puppy so the children would get to know her was actually terrible. Actually just meant a lot of chaos and attempting to concentrate on 10 things at once.

Not hard work compared to actual real hard work obviously.

Plus balanced out by her being amazing. She's been totally unfazed getting mobbed by crowds of children in playgrounds, etc. Done a couple of 1.5 hour drives with no issues - just goes to sleep. She does sleep a lot.
Interspersed with very manic playing. Will be much easier when it's possible to walk her and I don't have to carry her round in a bag all the time.

  • Staffie.
Obviously photos somewhat selective, but she has been incredibly friendly to everyone so far. During what's presumably a pretty traumatic week being taken away from her mum and siblings.
Obviously need to get her socialised with other dogs ASAP as that's more likely to be an issue than people.

Not clear which one is challenging. Either way, is that an Affenpischer? If so, they're arseholes. Lovely, but arseholes.

  • Good guess it’s a Brussels Griffon which are about 50% Affenpinscher.
She has bad health issues, maybe fatal.
The other big problem is BGs bond obsessively with one person, she has switched this to my wife who gets followed 24 hrs a day.
My dog , Otto, is trying to pretend it’s not happening

  • Ah, all the BGs I've known have been much bigger than her, but always very happy dogs. Hope her health problems are surmountable, poor wee lass.

Otto's great - schnauzers have the best faces for expressing grumpiness.

  • ^Otto looks great 😊

We have an Otto too! We think part giant schnauzer, part Catalan Shepherd (and maybe part wolf).

Doesn’t think twice about coming on a 40km MTB ride.

  • Looks ready for adventure. I wonder why it’s such a common dog name. In Barcelona and the U.K. we hear it all the time.

  • Otto Von Bismark, I searched for a dog sized picklehaube but no joy

  • A flat-coated retriever - we're collecting her next Friday (pictures when we do).

I've taken the week off so can't have made it much easier. Will be interesting when we go back to working from home, think separation anxiety is something we'll need to work on.

Are you looking at training classes? We visited one this weekend and I'm minded to take her as soon as we can. Sounds like you're already getting some great socialisation in from the bag!

  • No, first dog of any sort but have looked after friend's staffies a fair amount and have always been my favourite breed. Any tips? Obviously know that socialising with other dogs is main thing.
Daisy looks great. Suspect Ada will end up looking similar.
She slept for approx 13 hours last night. Was very manic when she woke up. Is fast asleep on my knee again now.

  • Will look forwards to pictures. May do classes but haven't had time to plan much this week. I have friends with very well trained dogs so hope she'll learn hanging out with them too.
Haven't got as far as thinking about leaving her on her own, but being freelance it shouldn't be an issue for a while. Plus have many dog loving friends so I'll drop her off with them if we need to leave her until she's really ready for it.

  • Am sure will be fine. As a family we have had staffies for 60 years. Daisy is No. 19. Love the breed. I

Yes socialisation critical. I took Daisy out into the park in my arms pre jabs before was allowed to put her on ground so she could watch what going on. Also held her and let her say hello to other dogs nose to nose after checking with owner dog ok and vaccinated. Most owners appreciate what trying to do.

When on ground tried to get her to meet as many other dogs as possible. If playing with other dogs made sure didnt play for too long 2-3 mins before giving her space to reset and shake off. Playing too crazy isnt good. Socialisation to different things in first 16 weeks is key. As get older guidance on boundaries v important. Staffies are lovely but very strong willed, very competitive and get themselves in trouble because of this.

Recommend Steve Mann Easy Peasy Puppy Squeezy. Esp' crate training if have kids as guess you will be training the kids as much as the pup? PM me if needs.

  • border terriers and Alsatians are sworn enemies.

Didn't know this was a thing!
Other than Bosco getting super lairy everytime we see a German Shepherd.
Glad it isn't just him being a prick, it's all the BTs

  • Nice! I'd recommend getting her out with a dog walker a couple of times a week when you can. It really helped Crumpet to get used to spending time with a mix of other dogs and spending time apart from us. Plus she fucking loves it and is knackered for 24 hour after each walk which is handy.

  • Fredstable fell asleep with his face squashed on my clean laundry. Woke up with such a silly face with his lip stuck on his teeth. Had a couple of weeks where he seemed determined to injure himself; ran into some barbed wire, punctured his side on something, then had an argument over a ball with another whippet and added more wounds to his side. They do have ridiculously thin skin.
He is certainly mellowing as he approaches his 2nd birthday, even the cat will greet him now with headbutts.
