  • So I've my first marathon Sunday week and I've come down with a dose. Seems like a standard cold stuffed nose, chesty cough. I believe this happens in a taper. Worse part is I can't seem to get a decent kip up every couple of hours. What's the advice? Obviously want to get to the start line in as good a shape as possible.

  • Not a marathon runner but feel that I have enough experience of long distance/time efforts and illness to weigh in.

    Imho, all you can do is rest, be kind to yourself, try not to worry and make sure you eat and drink as well as you can and go into the day with an open mind and give it your best shot. You've been training for however many months with a goal in mind...goal anxiety is real. Don't let it grind you down. Listen to your body. If you feel good to do some shorter runs closer to the time then do. But the main thing is rest and recovery I reckon.

  • If you just want to stop the symptoms to get some sleep then Sinutab is good at doing that. Not sure what effect it will have on performance, it's never affected mine but I'm not doing big distances or racing.

  • cold, niggles, mediocre sleep. definitely sounds like a taper

    Joking aside, if it's just the sniffles then I'd carry on with the taper as normal - i.e. similar intensity but lower volume.
    sleep as well as you can, stay hydrated, don't be tempted to try and squeeze in extra training. expect to feel twitchy and lazy

    if the cold turns into something more then reassess, otherwise trust the process, the hay is in the barn, [insert other cliché here]

  • Maybe I misunderstood. For me, sniffles is above the neck and chesty cough is something. I'd rest rather than run through.

  • So turns out I've a chest infection and have been given a course of antibiotics for 5 days. I'll be finished them Tuesday, marathon Sunday. Not sure if that'll be enough time but sure we'll see

  • Managed to get a place for the Grizzly, which will be my longest run yet up and down along the east Devon coast..

  • Tread careful, it might take more out of you than you realise. Was in a similar situation earlier this year and it took a lot from my usual pace.

  • Yea I'm not really sure what to do to be honest. I've just been resting up and starting to feel more human. I guess I'll just have to play it by ear. Did you end up racing?

  • I decided to do it and not go flat out, turned out the best decision because it was a fun day. Good luck whatever you choose to do.

  • London Marathon ballot results today. Nothing yet. Hoping for a yes that I can defer for a year...

    I've got a Ride 100 place and my Swim Serpentine place will be deferred after it was cancelled this year due to QEII's funeral, so part of me would like to do all 3 in one year even if I won't be able to get in proper shape for the marathon by April 2023.

  • Someone else entered me into this year's ballot.
    Naturally it is the first successful one in 9 years.
    Not sure if it will fit in with schedule, but @Sainsburys_Ed has thrown the gauntlet down now...
    Will have to see if the 'A' Race in cycling materialises, in which case- deferral is only realistic option.

  • Same here. Probably a good thing; I'm trying to stay super safe and building up the miles reaaally slowly. I reckon I'll be ready for marathon distance by 2031

  • I received 2 no’s from London today one ballot one and the other gfa ‘not fast enough’ looks like they applied different cuts in different age groups, but the cut off was 2:56:30 for the 18-39 category…

    Feeling a little disappointed now, but have Ironman plans for next year so at least it means I can focus on getting my swimming and cycling back in order!

    Also did a park run, hungover last weekend and did 17:50, so nearly 30 seconds faster than when fully trained and with a mini taper… admittedly different courses but still a bit of a head spinner!

  • I'm also out of the mass event, so I'll do another virtual one, which I think I actually prefer.

    Might do one near Margate in december as well, just to keep my arm in. It's two different out and backs, it'll be windy and suitably grim - ie right up my alley

  • I always figured it's the sugary fuel that helps after a drinking session. Not a great way to improve performance but minimal gains right?

  • Pulled something in my right calf on tonights run - felt just like the start of the tear that I got by trying to run through a similar thing a number of years ago.

    Hopefully it's just the muscle being annoying - but it's been a couple of hours and I'm struggling to walk and can't put any weight on it. What do?

    Keep your weight off it & try to avoid walking. Book a Physio / Sports Injury appointment.

  • Anyone with experience of the Hoka carbon x2 or the endorphin 2 ?- fancy trying something new.
