I really like some of the 650B conversions that are knocking about.
I've been toying with the idea of converting my old track frame to a 650B with mudgaurds and a new set of forks.
This one is quite tasty:

650A might be a cheaper way to go; good tires that cost less are more widely available, and the rims are bigger than 650B and look possibly more natural in a frame meant for 27s or 700 wheels.
They don't have that "air" about them of course, nor the wild colours. -

Whats the advantage to putting 650 wheels on?,
And what's 650a and 650b, is one the racer lo-pro/kids bike size and the other normal 26mtb size?

The advantage is the ability to put fatter tires on a frame built for narrow 700s or 27s.
This allows a cushier ride.27 inch = 630mm
700C = 622mm
650A = 590mm
650B = 584mm
650C = 571mm
26 inch mountain bike = 559mmTattoo this ^ onto something you often look at.

Some lovely bikes - in my original post I asked if anyone had tackled a project to produce a randonneur bike. No response yet so maybe they are as yet still rare in UK.
-

I wouldn't say 'rare'. of all the decent quality steel bikes I see around here, half are racers, quarter are tourers (26" mtb & 27" road) the last quarter are randonneurs & town bikes. no fixies in sight ;)
That is my favourite so far, ridiculous amount of detail in it and matching steel framed bag. Properly fitted 'guards too, pisses me off when I see badly fitted ones ;) Also the massive tyres colour shouldn't work, but does. -

That’s a big bump - if you’re into Randonneur bikes, another modern company that makes some beauties is Mariposa in Toronto.

Ah, now there's a thread I can definitely identify with.

Any idea what brand that is? I have a soft spot for black bikes like that.

So people can stop posting Rando bikes in the Functional thread god willing.

Thought you'd be pleased, another thread to post shit bikes in that have some vague resemblance to the original idea ;)

I was reading about the interest in French-style randonneur bikes in the US - many custom builders are building them. I love the proportions and workmanlike appearance of these bikes - I ripped these inspirational pics from the web. Has anyone tackled a similar project? Any pics would be appreciated.
