Everyone seemingly forgets that Johnson won the London mayorship not once but twice. So he was more than able to appeal to the centrist dads. What if he gets elected, and hangs out in the one-nation wing of the Tory party? Keeps Hunt, and fills the cabinet with people who aren't nuts. Which would be the rational thing to do.

His shit-eating grin and the Tory cheers at PMQs will be unbearable

Because the ERG wing of the party will undermine him at every turn, to the point where he can't get any legislation through parliament.
The Tories need to go into opposition, so they can tear themselves apart over the Brexit fantasy they forced on the nation, rather than doing it in Government and taking the whole country down with them.
I hope, although I have little confidence, that there are enough Tory MPs with the sense to realise that they should be no part of this and either resign, forcing by-elections, or cross the floor of the House.

he's already got the memorable three word slogan, that's enough for the idiots to vote him in on.

I remember being a teenager and ordering BMX parts from US shops and even with customs duty it was significantly cheaper than buying them here. Salad days, indeed.

That was the pre-Brexit Johnson, who had a continual stream of anti-Labour/Anti-Livingstone propoganda peddled daily by the Evening Standard.
The first Johnson term saw some policy implementation, the pipeline left by the Livingstone team.
The second Johnson term saw drift and inactivity because he had been so indolent in years 1-4 the policy pipeline was empty.
Can't find a link, but I thought the Johnson victories were heavily dependent upon the outer London boroughs. -

The various grifters coming out saying Johnson is the only unity candidate is really doing back things for my blood pressure, absolutely shameless

Truss was a unity candidate, united against her

But, yes, we must be into the near end-game now. Surely they can't keep this corpse going for much longer. If there's a GE soon the Tories are fucked. And it will be a very happy day.
The last sentence is why the party will do anything to keep it going as long as possible. Play for time and hope that you get lucky with a warm winter and soft monetary landing in the US (both unlikely).
It's not really in the spirit of this thread but I actually don't think the Westminster system would work very well with a 500+ seat Labour government. An effective opposition is quite important, so if you do get some rebuilding on the right that allows a 1997-style HoC composition it's not the end of the world.

Greens in opposition pls

Indeed, but you never know, it's wishful thinking but:-
- 500+ seat Labour Government
- Push through PR
- Have a practice election under PR to get people used to the idea
- Call a real GE under PR
- Come back with a lower majority and more of an opposition and a more representative opposition
- 500+ seat Labour Government

That's the dream, huge majority, push through a huge amount of structural changes to reform how our Government works that deliver long term improvement
Less hopeful that would be the reality but would love to be wrong
-
• #1215
Labour won't implement PR if they get in with a large majority

If Starmer does that I would have huge respect for him, but I wouldn't fault him for waiting 4-5 years between steps 1 and 2 to execute his policy programme. First priority would be to reverse measures of the last 12 years that continue to cause real harm every day.

True.
Also, is Liz Truss tiny, are these Wankpanzers huge, or both?
-
• #1218
I think Truss and Sunak are the same height - about 5'6"?

This. Exciting as the mega poll leads are, it needs to be closer to have a chance of electoral reform happening.

There’s still a lot of don’t knows in the polling numbers that’ll likely go back to the Tory’s come Election Day. it’s a return of the shy Tory syndrome (ashamed Tory)
When it comes down to it I can’t see there vote share falling below 30%

LibDems with an early day motion to bar an MP who has broken the law while in government from standing as PM. That would be Boris and sunak out.
Also this was a chuckle
Earlier today, Business Secretary Jacob Rees-Mogg became the first cabinet minister to declare which way they were voting in the leadership race.
He tweeted a graphic saying "I'm backing Boris", alongside the phrase #BorisOrBust.
Tim Loughton, the Conservative MP for East Worthing & Shoreham, said: "Jacob - how on earth can that slogan be remotely helpful to the party given the strong possibility that the next PM will not be Boris?
"I would not use the tagline #BorisOrBust and you really should think this through properly if you have any interest in party unity."

No. But there are going to be lots of ex-Conservative MPs looking for cushy directorships come the next election, so best to get ahead of the game.
At least 36 crossing the floor would be a glorious start to Boris' first session back in Parliament.
But, yes, we must be into the near end-game now. Surely they can't keep this corpse going for much longer.
