Because the ERG wing of the party will undermine him at every turn, to the point where he can't get any legislation through parliament.
The Tories need to go into opposition, so they can tear themselves apart over the Brexit fantasy they forced on the nation, rather than doing it in Government and taking the whole country down with them.
I hope, although I have little confidence, that there are enough Tory MPs with the sense to realise that they should be no part of this and either resign, forcing by-elections, or cross the floor of the House.

That was the pre-Brexit Johnson, who had a continual stream of anti-Labour/Anti-Livingstone propoganda peddled daily by the Evening Standard.
The first Johnson term saw some policy implementation, the pipeline left by the Livingstone team.
The second Johnson term saw drift and inactivity because he had been so indolent in years 1-4 the policy pipeline was empty.
Can't find a link, but I thought the Johnson victories were heavily dependent upon the outer London boroughs.
Everyone seemingly forgets that Johnson won the London mayorship not once but twice. So he was more than able to appeal to the centrist dads. What if he gets elected, and hangs out in the one-nation wing of the Tory party? Keeps Hunt, and fills the cabinet with people who aren't nuts. Which would be the rational thing to do.
