Rim width? I wouldn't want a 2.6 on a rim narrower than 30mm internal.
Also, bigger tyres can provide more cushioning, which is welcome on a hardtail - but pressure is even more key as too much and you bounce on climbs, too little and you squirm.
Big tyres are not great in mud either.
