No that's a limitation, with the bar-ends I can use the brakes but not the shifters. But it still is a nice (and cheap) upgrade, especially when climbing or just resting the ends
it's more a question of space with my set up - i have old style thumb shifters on top of the bars rather than trigger shifters under the bars, so i've got quite a lot of bar clutter going on already.
This might sound dumb but you can try mounting the shifters upside down. I've done it a couple of times out of necessity but it's actually quite comfy to use them like that.
