  • Exactly the same happened to me earlier in the summer (mine were also silent beforehand). I also assumed bolts not tight enough, so added thread locker to them when I re-torqued them at home. They've been fine since.

  • Selling these, for the larger footed amongst you

  • Pinch bolts are basically 21st century cotter pins aren't they?
What was wrong with square taper anyway, apart from Shimano couldn't make any IP money out of it?

  • Interesting- thanks.

  • You tightening the bolts by alternating between each bolt bit by bit up to specified torque rather than fully torquing one then other?

  • His Shimano crank somehow stayed attached to the bike...

On a more serious note: This ^
The torque drops significantly on each bolt two or three times when bringing them up to spec alternately.

  • Brage is insane! so unbelievably fast/aggressive

  • What dual (duel?) susser should I get?

  • What was wrong with square taper anyway

The same people that can't tighten pinch bolts also over-tightened square taper?

  • More often they under tightened square taper.

  • On this occasion I didn't do this. I remember doing 'by the manual' when building the bike and then forgot about it when changing chainring.

  • Santa Cruz 5010 seems nice

  • What do you want to do with it?

  • Swear at it when he breaks it

  • Honestly I don't know - I clearly did something wrong. Normally I'm very careful to do everything correctly, torque spec correct etc, but maybe I just YOLO'd the cranks on when I built it.

I've ordered some replacement locking plates, plastic preload cap and I also stuck a Saint metal preload cap in the basket to see if that would work on my XT cranks.

  • Over, under - maybe both at the same time. It doesn't matter. The end result is the same.

  • Lean it next to the Stanton while I ride my gravel bike.

  • Swear at it when he breaks it

    Also this.

  • Dredging the specialized tyre chat - is there a good reason why I wouldn’t go for as big as possible (2.6) rear on my hardtail?

I’ve got a purgatory rear and butcher front in my basket - both 2.6. Mainly riding local rocky trails and Forrest of Dean/Cannock. The price compared to other brands is attractive.

  • Rim width? I wouldn't want a 2.6 on a rim narrower than 30mm internal.

Also, bigger tyres can provide more cushioning, which is welcome on a hardtail - but pressure is even more key as too much and you bounce on climbs, too little and you squirm.

Big tyres are not great in mud either.

  • This is really good advice that I just assumed would be fine. Turns out they are 25mm rims and recommend up to 2.5inch.

Looks like 2.3 front and rear it is, thanks!

  • A 2.4 would be fine on 25mm.

I've been around the houses of wheel and tyre size, but I'm back where I was a decade ago with 2.4 front and rear.

  • Chisel came with 25mm rim and 2.4 fast tracks. Insert made it feel nicer, less bouncy.

... then I dented the rim and bought some 30mm wide Deore XT wheels. Still on 2.4s.

  • Enduro then.
