  • My pal got a quote of similar money recently too in Glasgow. Wild

  • I think I could do it but it’s more a reflection of how poorly paid I am than anything else!

  • @konastab01 we had ours done by a guy whose now in the West End #golfclub (we’re just outside Glasgow) if your pal isn’t in a rush I can recommend him.

  • I would like a built in wardrobe as much as the next guy but these prices are insane. Who knew they set you back as much as a pair of Saddam Hussein solid gold taps.

  • Aye send me over the details and Ill pass them onto here. Guessing they done a good job yeah?!

  • Yep yep. Sent you a message.

  • Depends on just HOW fancy.
I'm gonna build a 3m wide, 3.2m high, 0.8m deep job in our spare room, then another almost the same in hallway for sports/stuff/life storage. Even at the 'trade' price I get as an odd job guy who is chatty with jewson/buildbase/howdens/local wood yard. It'll be £1500 in sheet material and sawn timber, then finishs, trims, hinges, lighting, air conditioning, heated floors for the shoes etc* is all on top.
Will probably take me 5 days in my head, but 10 days + in reality.

*Don't worry, I'm not heating my entire storage area. Just the bit for shoes, putting a DIY shoe drier in there, PVC pipe + small extractor + small heater + exhaust for those wet shoes.

  • Absolutely. MDF + some router skills and some planning is one thing, but proper carpentry is another level, and its dying out TBH. Few folk round here have realised just how much it costs for a proper carpenter built custom kitchen, can just about triple any other quote you have. HOWEVER, in the right house, it absolutely add's value and if you plan to live in it for 10 years plus, you are gonna be very happy with it. Not like the throwaway garbage that you get from Wren/B+Q/anything online, which is unlikely to actually do 10 years hard use by a small family before it disintegrates.

  • WATCH THIS video that CUPBOARD CARPENTERS don't want you to know about!!!

  • Seriously tho if you want to diy it seems like a good approach

  • Big carpenter got there first.

  • Surely it's Big Carpentry rather than a single extra large carpenter going round taking down videos

  • Hactually, you're wrong on that one.

  • Even BIG CarPENTery can't hold me back

Obviously I realise in today's prices he uses £10ks worth of wood and tools.

  • 12mm MDF doors are a bit flimsy, Tricky getting hinges on/in them too. MRMDF not really a requirement (he says standard on pro builds but that's not been my experience) and ply for the shelves is overkill. The drawer runners are not that nice. All screwed together too, hello 1990's 👋🏻.

Fairplay for the hand design work, it's been a long time but I have a few notebooks like that.

Don't do overlay doors, but a really nice finish is doubling up the mdf and inlaying the door with an overlay set back behind it. Keeps them airtight if you get it right.

What a game with the plinth, it's a lot easier with a laser. Can't make my mind up about the way he finishes the plinth but I've never thought to do it that way.

There's a great tool for handling MDF sheets https://www.amazon.co.uk/Gorilla-Gripper-Multi-function-Farewell-Backache/dp/B07TV51JV4

  • 👍

TBH I think it's going to be a few years before I have time to do that sort 0f thing.

Also he does a faker shaker design on the doors so I think it's 12mm + more.

  • Super dull question that I can't believe I'm asking....

My mum wants a nice basket/container to put all the bits for her little Dyson in for her birthday.

How do people on here store their Dyson bits and bits?

I don't have time to commission a custom baltic birch ply container, so only otp options pls.

Or is there a vacuum cleaner thread? I can't believe there isn't one on here but a search didn't show anything.

    Cheers.

  • Smallish F&M hamper - makes a practical gift a bit more interesting?

  • You can get the ones you affix to the wall?

  • Lol. Carrier bag on a cup hook in the cupboard.
I appreciate this is not necessarily a great gift option.

  • Ha!

No it lives on the upstairs landing.

I think there is another one for downstairs.

F&M hamper isn't a bad idea, although I swear my folks have them coming out of their ears.

I think I need to check the exact dimensions.
I think it's something like this

  • Bristol water charge me £63 p month (no meter, band b first floor flat). Some friends of mine have a similar size flat but with a garden in the same area but pay £25 (again no meter).
I mentioned this on the phone with them and they said nothing we can do it is on the rateable value of the property in the 90s.

Has anyone else been charged more than their neighbours and is it an Ofwat job? Don't want to throw my mates under a bus and provide their bill. Cheers

  • I'm paying about £40 a month for a 3 bedroom house (with garden) so that does seem steep.

    That's with a meter though.

  • Yeah mate that's well high, I'm in a 3 bed house with a garden and I'm paying 29 quid a month (no meter).

  • You can always go on a meter if you think you're being overcharged
