It does have custom racks and lowrider and a hub dynamo at least

Tbh, it’s not unheard of for a touring bike without a mudguard, like this guys who currently touring in Mongolia.

Outside the scope of regular 'touring' Ed. He's been on more of an expedition for the past 5 years or so...

More than half of my cycle touring is off-road where mudguards would be a hindrance and big tyres are everything, road touring is dull.

That’s kinda the thing, would we says a Trek FX1 not a touring bike cause it only got a rear rack and marathon plus?

It’s all subjective, I’d removed mudguard for off road touring.

My point wasn't on touring dude. Tour on whatever the fuck you want and with mudguards or not.
My point was that he, and his bike, are not a prime example of how your average person tours. Little biased.
He's of a very small percentage of people that have been on the road for multiple years.

Tbf I'm not sure I'd call that a 'touring bike', classically. Wouldn't fancy that gearing on a loaded tour on or off road (unless my eyes arent seeing that right).

I actually met a tourer who quite like his 11 speed 11-36t when he paired with a 42/28 chainset, if worst come to worse, he just put a 11-42t on it.

(most Shimano derailleur can handle a 11-40t with a 16t jump chainring nowadays, even 105 R7000).

Close. Been running 42/26 x 11-40 this summer; it's awesome.

I’ve ridden this Roberts (to test ride after a service) with a 50/40/30 chainset, I have to says I genuinely miss a good triple, that gearing would be 100% perfect for alpine climb.

Good old Spa Cycles! I literally just cut the guard to get the front derailleur to work better.

Give it a few years dude. Triples will be back. Or at least doubles.
So easy to set up. So little problems, so many gears.

That’s the thing, only recently I was able to get a triple to work with the trims and zero chain rub (Sora triple for example), I always expected a little chain rub or two but zero on the modern triple.

Plus, with 11+ speed, there’s very little need for it nowadays when it offer a big range without a massive gap between each sprocket, having said that, would be great to have an almost straight block with a triple 11 speed drivetrain.
