  • It’s getting better all the time- low speed feels better now I got a right hand lever for the front disc brake so now my brake levers are on the correct side. The difference in braking power between the disc on the front and the hub on the back is mental.

Speaking of the hub, that’s the final snag. It’s a Sturmey Archer X-RD5(W) and try as I might, I just can’t get it to behave nicely. I’ve lubed the shifter, replaced the cable and tried indexing it according to the instructions multiple times and it’s still skippy and vague.

    Should I
    A) brave taking the hub apart
    B) find a hub brake nexus or something. Are they the best budget option?
    C) do a derailleur and disc conversion (do cheap disc adapters result in death? Are my mig skills up to welding some mounts on? Probably not)
    D) some combination of the above

Also, this old surfboard soft roof rack nicely cushions the ride :)

  • Had a customer with an 8 speed sturmey, apparently misbehaved from new, no one knew what to do, they'd been to a bunch of shops, some had obviously tried to take it apart.
Sent it away to SA importer/service shop, they said wasn't anything really wrong just a dissemble CLA kind of a job.
Put it back on customers bike, literally imploded within 20 metres of trying to ride it down the street. Sent it back to SA and they actually rebuilt the wheel as there was something to with the ring thats pressed into the alloy hub shell that was not right with it.
