  • Bit of both. Initially I’ll just be going to the office and back. But later on there will be travel

This is all very new so apologies for all the dumb questions

  • Only 3 weeks since the last scare story:

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-63029226

  • Not sure what the point is for that story.
'It's still cheaper to use an EV, even if you use the most expensive method of filling, which the majority of people don't. But it's more expensive than it was.'

  • To put people off buying one?

New 'Hipercar' from Ariel - 1180hp from 4 wheel mounted motors + a jet engine as a range extender to recharge the batteries...

  • Get on Octopus go/go faster or even better, intelligent and get up to 6 hours cheap rate charging overnight (7.5p/8.25p per unit) works out about 2p per mile, difference will more than cover the charger

  • Octopus energy? Will they provide a charge point?

  • So this is a hybrid?

  • No, the jet engine doesn't directly provide any motive power to the wheels, it's an onboard power plant for a generator that recharges the battery.

So, yes it burns petrol or hydrogen, but not as a traditional hybrid.

  • Is there anyway to get a free charging point?

  • I got a free one with my lease deal - through vanarama.

  • That said, I got the car in Nov and the charger in Feb, so ¯\(ツ)

  • My partner had a test drive of the MG5 today. She said it's really nice inside the photos she sent me make it look really premium. I think we're going to go for a second hand Niro plug in hybrid instead but it's definitely on the books if we want to swap to full electric later

  • I got my own charge point installed at my cost, was a pain but worth it, you need one to take advantage of the rates from Octopus.
There are some that do subscription type services, so like £30 a month and nothing upfront but I never really looked into them.

  • I think we’re with British Gas. My wife deals with the admin. So annoyingly I’ll have to put my hand in my pocket for the charger.

  • I’ve a model 3 for the weekend. First impressions are that it’s nice to drive - seems much bigger when driving than it looks from the outside and has a couple 1970s British Leyland style squeaks.

50 miles done, another couple of hundred to go

  • Interesting now the Chinese manufacturers are entering the UK market to see if they manage to get any traction and shake things up, think Byd and Ora have both released cars now and Xpeng coming soon

  • We’re probably going to be ordering an MG4 this week to replace the wife’s Zoe.

Hard to argue with the value vs range and reviews have been really good.

I can see the Chinese manufacturers properly gaining traction like the Korean manufacturers 20 years ago.

  • Test drive an MG4 on Friday to replace the dead Zoe.

Really impressed with it. Much nicer to drive than the Zoe and decent interior if a little dark. Camera quality was the only shit thing about it.

Ordered. Should be with us by end of year.

  • I’m test driving an MG EV on Saturday. It’s the last car I would think about getting but the car scheme at work is extremely limited.

    Mini Electric
    Peugeot 208e
    Vauxhall Corsa electric
    MG ZS EV
    MG 4 EV
    Mazda cx30 5
    Nissan Leaf

The main things I need are comfort because I’ll be mainly doing long journeys and range for those long journeys

  • Out of those, I would go MG4 or Nissan Leaf.

    MG4 will be cheaper.

Completely avoid the Mini, Corsa and Mazda.

  • I would agree, have a Nissan Leaf 40kw, whilst comfy is not for long journeys with regards to range (90 motorway miles between charges roughly ime and 40 mins to get to 80%), MG4 has a bigger battery and can charge at up to 150kw which is very handy for long journeys. Consider range at 80% as well as this is all you will really charge to on Rapid in the wild as the battery management throttles back charge rate after that.

  • From the research I’ve done, I completely agree. What about the MG EV?

Cost isn’t such a big deal as it’s a work car.

  • ZS is older tech and lower range as far as I'm aware, also slower charging the MG4

  • ^ this.

I know I've just ordered one so biased but MG4 is the way to go on that list. Either SE LR or Trophy LR depending on your budget.
