User @konastab01 doesn’t know his audience. This isn’t a Morrisons, Tesco or Asda crowd. Waitrose (M&S Food Hall at a pinch) of GTFO

That's not fair to ask on a public forum. It's specific to the area people work in as well. As it happens @konastab01 has given a lot of details about how and why he operates over the years I've been reading this thread and it always seems to add up in my estimation.
Like I said before, some trades do and some don't. I have trade accounts with places, I send customers to look at the pretty things, the shop rings me to ask if they can have the prices from my account, I say yes, the shop says, well ok then. In short it is also the case that you can be paying directly and still not receiving the discount that a tradesman would.
It's great that you're happy with your builder, one man's meat is another man's poison though. Each to their own.

Fucked it.

Why isn't it fair? I recently had to pay a plumber nearly 500 quid to be at my house for 5 hours. I was very miffed about it but the work needed certification which only he could provide. why wouldn't he say what he charges for a day rate unless he was as embarrassed about it?
-
• #55307
My day rate or hourly rate is negligible as it depends on the size of the job the difference between a half day gig and a 3 month is huge.
What your missing is that say you want a anything mechanical fitted, you pay trade price for all the material and the item breaks down. The 1st thing the manufacturer wants you as the tradesman to do is to go back to the job, what happens if its something I haven't done who compensating me for my time that I've lost, that's where the added mark up covers because you think you've paid the tradesman already and will be huffy about having to pay him again as you should because you've used valuable time that he won't get compensated for. These are the things alot of people dont understand because they dont look at it that way.

Fuckin Serfs need to know their place

• #55309
Why are you being so bullish about this? Demanding to know a stranger’s day rate is a bit weird m8, lol.
-
• #55310
Honestly my day rate is so expensive you couldn't afford me mate.

• #55311
Classy.

Calm down gents.

• #55313
Im glad you agree.

Use better quality materials/components or simply don't fuck it up when you do the job is my very frank advice to you in response to what is a very boring tale about the trials and tribulations of running a business where people rely on your care and skill when carrying out your work (and your honesty too which seems to be palpable by its absence in how you apparently operate)
-
• #55315
Been a while since we’ve had a good barney on here.
-
• #55316
Hahahaha. Sure thing kid.
Even the best of the best breaks down, but maybe not in your world as you are obviously daddy's best boy growing up and it was never your fault always someone else's when something happened. You also keep referencing honesty, which is kinda funny too as if someone trying to make money is dishonest. Baffling

U wot mate? I'm daddy's what?

How is being a business dishonest, genuine question.
It’s all about disclosure. The customer should be able to understand what they are being charged for and how that splits between labour, materials and anything else. If that’s all transparent then it’s obviously not dishonest.
What I dislike about the “% on materials” model is that you get charged more for selecting higher quality materials even if there’s no additional time required. Similarly, the contractor is incentivised to up-sell or over-spend to inflate the total materials cost.
Of course, if the job is competitively tendered and is delivered according to the initial plan, it shouldn’t make a difference either way, but we both know that it’s not like that in the real world.

Lets not kid, im not your mate and im n0t yours. You're just some cheap skate with a superiority complex and are very self entitled.
-
• #55320
I think you've come off pretty badly here. Maybe you don't mean to but quite honestly you've not employed @konastab01 to do a job so your comments/advice are not that meaningful.
Adding a bit to materials is a perfectly acceptable practice in the trades for all the reasons you've been given and more. You don't like it, fine, there are people like me who don't do it. You pays your money, you takes your choice.
If you don't understand why no one is obliged to give their hourly rate to satisfy you on a public forum you need to check yourself.
-
• #55321
Come on, don't be shy (although I respect your efforts to cover your mates backside)
I'm a failure who can't afford to use him, apparently. Let's say I get a promotion at work and inherit a ton of money, and then find I need a new boiler - what will he charge me for a day of his time? Is it some sort of state secret?
-
• #55322
No, it's just fuck off from me.

• #55323
1000000 dorrans

What’s the point? Any answer will be some kind of ammunition for you.
Just re-read Airhead’s balanced commentary and move on.

Ah another tradesman who must like ripping people off. Come in come in, the water is lovely and warm.
I genuinely don't understand why none of you will say what a day of your time will cost. You seem to robustly wish to defend your methodology but there is an alarming reluctance to actually give the figure. Funny that isn't it?
Can’t speak for anyone else, but my time is my time on site and I charge for that, eg if in there for a day, I charge for a day - I’m not charging you for the time I was running around getting materials sorted, so there’s a % added on top of material costs. I’m also not going to bill for all the bits of bobs of consumables that get used so charging extra on the materials I buy usually covers this as well.
Essentially, it comes down to are you happy with the total price. How it’s broken down is irrelevant.
I hate people buying the materials for me. It’s just an added headache. Also, this whole issue is way more complicated than is realistically worth explaining. And one of the reasons I jumped on the books rather than operating a business tbh.
Also, @princeperch you can’t compare a “6 figure” job to someone doing 6 rads. They will clearly be done differently lol.
I can’t imagine going to change a load of sockets and ringing up at the wholesaler to get the client to pay. Also, the trades may have been happy to do this as it keeps their turnover down.
