  • We contacted a local scout group who delivered and set up for us for cheap.

  • Tithe barn? Some of them let you do your own food - or at least choose a caterer... Advantage that you won't freeze either

  • Most marquee companies will travel. As a student I did work that involved travel from South London to a job in leeds

  • Should've given them a few extra quid to mow the grass first.

  • What's included in the quote? Just your marquee or also everything else?
We did the tipi thing this year and for 120 people it was considerably lower than that.

If it's a field you have with nothing else, don't forget to factor in a generator, water, toilets and then of course tables, chairs, a gazebo for the caterers and what not.

  • 180 is quite a big marquee. This place is a lot less than 16k for something smaller, depends if you don't mind two side by side: https://www.vintagemarquees.co.uk/smaller-marquees/brixworth/

  • We used silverback stretch tents, based in Kenilworth. IMO stretch tents are way nicer than marquees anyway, and they were v reasonably priced and professional. https://www.silverbackstretchtents.com

  • Oooh, great shout. I can see that quite a few groups do hire marquees, but largely on the smaller side. Mind my asking what size that marquee is and which group you hired from?

  • Looked into similar, not quite what we're after - they all (or at least all the ones I've found) seem to want music to stop at 11pm and everyone out by 1130pm, which is definitely not what we're looking for...

  • Ha, yep, I did similar actually.

Travel was itemised at £3k for a 70 mile journey in one quote I received... 🤣

  • All quotes have been for everything that company could provide (basically everything except toilets and generators, which some places don't want to do).

  • Fuck me, weddings in this country are insane, me and my wife rented a Chateau in France for 4 days for ours and it only cost 6 grand (euros). 16k for a fucking tent is mindblowing.

  • I've had quotes from them! You have to remember that delivery (they were the £3k for 70 mile journey people), VAT and all other sundries are not included on that price they show online... they were not the £16k people, but they were 5 figures.

  • Nice, thanks for this - I'll drop them a line. My only concern with them would be (remembering UK wedding) if it's hammering down with sideways rain, is it not tricky to keep everyone dry/comfortable?

  • Blimey. I've got custody of a 40' x 20' canvas marquee (seats about 100) that comes out once every year or so. Clearly I should be making some cash from it.

On the other hand van hire and fuel was about £550 and you need half a dozen big people to put it up/take it down safely and if it comes down wet you have a massive problem so the £3k is starting to look reasonable. I had the advantage of volunteers doing it for da yoof.

  • Enlist the yoof as your build crew and you're laughing....

  • How much did all your guests have to fork out for travel/accomodation etc?

  • @owl - these guys are good and slightly different to standard marquees. You can interlink different sizes to create areas for eg bar/dancing/eating etc - http://www.hectorshaus.co.uk/marquees.html

  • nice one, thanks. I've dropped them a line. Cheers

  • My wife's French so most of the guests lived in France (her family is way bigger than mine), The place had over 20 bedrooms and we had just over a hundred guests so almost everyone stayed at the venue for nothing.

  • +1 to France. This type of stuff is so much more reasonably priced. I think our marquee was €2k vs £10-15k.

Also as for guests travelling, have it somewhere nice and they get a short holiday. Plus it filters out the numbers. Anyway it'd still be cheaper for your guests than if say you wanted to get married in say Cornwall or Devon.

  • Try Grice & Foster Events Ltd- we paid about £5k Inc vat for an 80x40ft tent plus contents, toilets and a generator, although a few years ago.
Squeezed 120 people + band & dance floor in and had it up for 3 days.

  • had it up for 3 days

  • Tender writing - what's the knack?

This sounds like a job for a Consultant!

It may need the same approach as applying for a grant, when you're a charity. There are people who specialise in helping charities by writing grant applications. Perhaps you could find one, and bung them a few quid?
