I'm a failure who can't afford to use him, apparently. Let's say I get a promotion at work and inherit a ton of money, and then find I need a new boiler - what will he charge me for a day of his time? Is it some sort of state secret?
I think you've come off pretty badly here. Maybe you don't mean to but quite honestly you've not employed @konastab01 to do a job so your comments/advice are not that meaningful.
Adding a bit to materials is a perfectly acceptable practice in the trades for all the reasons you've been given and more. You don't like it, fine, there are people like me who don't do it. You pays your money, you takes your choice.
If you don't understand why no one is obliged to give their hourly rate to satisfy you on a public forum you need to check yourself.
