That's not fair to ask on a public forum. It's specific to the area people work in as well. As it happens @konastab01 has given a lot of details about how and why he operates over the years I've been reading this thread and it always seems to add up in my estimation.
Like I said before, some trades do and some don't. I have trade accounts with places, I send customers to look at the pretty things, the shop rings me to ask if they can have the prices from my account, I say yes, the shop says, well ok then. In short it is also the case that you can be paying directly and still not receiving the discount that a tradesman would.
It's great that you're happy with your builder, one man's meat is another man's poison though. Each to their own.
Why isn't it fair? I recently had to pay a plumber nearly 500 quid to be at my house for 5 hours. I was very miffed about it but the work needed certification which only he could provide. why wouldn't he say what he charges for a day rate unless he was as embarrassed about it?
