Think about that ride everytime the marathon is on. It was brilliant especially at the end avoiding security to sprint down the mall.

Whenever the marathon is on I tell people about that ride and I wasn’t even on it.

The cold early start up on the top of the hill. The comradeship.
The race to beat the martials /security cutting us off.
Fun memories

It happened more than once. I remember riding it at least twice.
Amazing fun both times.

And getting lost, well a group I rode with did, somewhere around Rotherhithe.
A rollercoaster of a ride.
I think a few East beers folk, rode out from Hackney to the start. Fox perhaps, BQ maybe -

I've done this ride a couple of times. The last time, we got shouted at by copper No.1 on Lower Thames street. A hundred yards further down the road, copper No.2 shouted at us. 'Your mate back there just told us to ride through as quickly as possible' I shouted back.
On The Mall, one of our party was pulled off his bike by a soldier. We went on to pass through the timing gates - then we couldn't find a way to get out of that area. A posh lady wearing more laminates than you could shake a stick at said 'How did you all broach this envelope? I have royalty arriving here in half an hour'. 'We rode here from Blackheath' quipped one of our party. Not being too keen on being shot at, we haven't done the ride since then. We went on to ride through the Limehouse Link, as that was closed to traffic. Got shouted at in there by some guys on a cherry picker fixing the ceiling lights. Managed to ride traffic free down Aspen Way all the way down to the big roundabout at the top of Manchester Road. It was a good day out. -

That was truly epic. I met up with a bunch of forumengers at Brick Lane Beigel Bake for a cup of tea and a salf beef beigel to set us up. There were some fast bits on the closed roads too. something like 40mph at one point down the embankment.
The rest of the day was spent in an increasingly drunken stupor with @jcgarcia and @ChainBreaker amongst others. -

That marathon ride was the furthest I'd ever ridden at the time

Did one of those Marathon rides - may have been one of the 'lost in Rotherhithe' group. Rode the course, then rode it backwards and then ran the marathon itself, jumping off around 23 miles as I was running on a fake number and couldn't go through the finish line as I'd get pinged.

Marathon Rides were good fun, as was the post ride coffee at Bar Italia.
I think I found this place in 2008/9 after trying to find out what those weird bikes everyone in Shoreditch was riding. Back then you could still give people 'rep' .

Are you racist toward fat white bald angry men, do we all look the same to you?
-
• #142
Unless you've put in some serious work I'd struggle to call you fat

• #143
Also everyone was riding fixed.

Haha brilliant!

Yeah I defo did two. 2009 might have been the first smaller one, 2010 was massive and the pack split up and got lost, then 2011 got rumbled by the marathon organiser

Also epic: Pajamas night time ride that ended at like 2am at the top of Brick Lane and there was some beef with a police van or something
