  • If i recall the membership office is at the manchester Shellodrome .

    Ftfy.

That will be an interesting day for them tomorrow.

Nice bunch, always v.helpful over the years.

Reminder to all that they're the public face, not the decision makers. Please save your anger for the higher-ups.

  • My contact at Scottish Cycling has said if I can provide BC with proof of coaching insurance then I don't need a membership

This is useful to know. I'm weighing up options similarly.

  • True the girls signing up where always helpful at the cycleshow . They must be dreading tomorrow

  • For anyone reaching the membership team, please remember the people on the other side are human, probably not responsible for signing the deal. I always had a good experience with that team.
Edit: only saw the rhb post above

  • Fucking hell ! What? What next?

Dewhurst the Butchers sponsor the Vegan Society?

  • Will ask our club to move member registrations to something like RiderHQ (we did it at Bath a while back), that’s not the worst option for administrating and they handle auto-renewals well.

  • Switched to Cycling UK after BC went all transphobe a few months back. Since then they’ve publicly shat their pants with the queen’s funeral nonsense and now this. Trash organisation.

  • Going to cancel my membership and put some of these stickers on my Brompton. What a bunch of idiots.

  • Had a similar idea. Requested they cancel my direct debit and keeping whoever does the odd photo approvals busy (probably automated).

This. Make Brian Facer and the other board members take ownership of this, not the people who work there.

  • I've been unhappy with BC for a long time, mainly because of their failure to give sufficient support to club level racing.

We should remember that the British Cycling Federation (created by a marriage of the NCU and the BLRC) was originally a membership organisation which was essentially controlled by club delegates and which existed primarily to promote grass roots racing.

The powers of club delegates have now been pretty well completely destroyed.

The current BC seems to be a hybrid business cum government organisation whose main interest is to win olympic medals. That would be fine if it were combined with supporting a decent level of racing for the ordinary club cyclists, but it isn't. It has also been noted that some of the BC inner circle of employees seem to draw substantial salaries.

Percy Stallard was the spikey, awkward hero who founded the British League of Racing Cyclists because he passionately believed that clubmen should be able to take part in road racing. He must be spinning in his grave!

Could another BLRC be on the horizon? BC needs some opposition!

  • Could another BLRC be on the horizon? BC needs some opposition!

Given I've spoken to people who are still bitter about the schisms of the BLRC/BC (or it's predecessor) debacle over 60 years later, I think the last thing the sport in this country needs is another dose of factionalism.

BC is recognised by the UCI as the governing body of cycle racing in this country, and that won't change. Instead I think the onus is on the membership to ensure that the values of the organisation reflect those of the members. By all means leave if you disagree so strongly, but for those that care about the future of cycling as a sport in this country, we should stay and fight for what we think is right.

  • "BC is recognised by the UCI as the governing body of cycle racing in this country, and that won't change."

On the 7th March 1953 the UCI voted to recognise the BLRC. Previously the NCU seemed to be in a rock solid, entrenched position.

Many worthy people have tried to resist the elitist/business tendency of BC from within, for example Peter King and Tony Doyle. Look where we are today.

  • @Velocio could this be pinned to the front page?

  • I’ve cancelled my membership, easy enough because I don’t race, tricky for those that do obviously. :(

The AGM is 20th November, I’ve made my local regional councillor aware of my view in the hope it will spread upwards.

Who wants to organise a critical mass drum and bass ride outside the venue on the day?

    Sad times.

  • Pop one of these on your toptube alongside those little name & flag decals.

  • HSBC, prior sponsor, significant money laundering fines

    https://www.ice.gov/news/releases/hsbc-admits-anti-money-laundering-and-sanctions-violations-following-hsi-el-dorado

As a result, HSBC Bank USA failed to monitor over $670 billion in wire transfers and over $9.4 billion in purchases of physical U.S. dollars from HSBC Mexico during this period, when HSBC Mexico's own lax AML controls caused it to be the preferred financial institution for drug cartels and money launderers.

A significant portion of the laundered drug trafficking proceeds were involved in the Black Market Peso Exchange (BMPE), a complex money laundering system that is designed to move the proceeds from the sale of illegal drugs in the United States to drug cartels outside of the United States, often in Colombia.

  • this might be just the thing that tts and hill climbs needed to boost numbers.

  • Yep, Shell is unfortunately only the most recent of a number of companies 'partnered' with BC which have less than upstanding ethical credentials. It is of course the most egregious of the bunch, but I doubt those at the top of BC particularly care that there's a contradiction between the interests of BC and those of Shell here... It doesn't help that they are desperate for money, as are other NGBs.

  • Pinned.

Removed the first two posts so that this is single topic

  • Would just like to echo those above who've said not to take this out on the membership team though—they are not responsible for this and do a difficult job within a difficult infrastructure!

  • The leadership of British Cycling has been an absolute disaster this year. They are as bad as the Torys for self-immolation, lurching from one self made PR disaster to the next.

  • I guess they figure the amount that leave will be less than what they gain .
My account is now canceled .

  • Is there any alternative to a BC licence if I want to compete in UCI events?
