  • And where are the BNP now since their voice was heard? Gone.

The only chance the "good" smaller parties get to influence things is if the others do too. Most people are still genuinely decent I'd like to think, so this would be a good thing.

  • Or have I got that wrong...

No you probaby have that right.

I just assumed it was the sort of thing that would require a parliamentary majority...didn't realise that having something on the manifesto and winning an election was enough.

  • Hang on are we mixing up whether the Lords pass bills which were in the manafesto?

Surely a government still has to pass a bill to pass the laws on how the electoral system works? For which they'd then need parliamentary majority.

I guess a key calculation is how many Tory seats the lib dems and greens take. Because they'd definitely vote for it, so as long as you have a decent number of Labour MPs in favour it'd go through.

  • The government can't just do anything they want without passing bills through parliament, unless it's a supposedly minor change which ministers can make according to an earlier act (known as a statutory instrument).

The Lords cannot block a bill introducing something that was in a winning party’s manifesto (Salisbury Convention) but can reject (for a while) or delay (for a parliamentary year) legislation that wasn't.

  • Labour on 45%, cunts on 28%. From yougov - biggest lead Labour have ever had since they've been polling.

    (any other leader etc)

  • This new Al Jazeera piece on the anti-semitism psyop is good.

Al Jazeera’s Investigative Unit uncovers the true story behind the “crisis of anti-Semitism” that engulfed the British Labour Party under Jeremy Corbyn. It made him appear unfit to govern and led to a crushing electoral defeat.

An analysis of internal party documents, social media data and covert recordings reveals how senior Labour officials used the party’s procedures to undermine support for Jeremy Corbyn and to silence debate about Israel’s treatment of Palestinians.
The files also show how pro-Israel groups ask the party to distance itself from the Boycott Divest and Sanctions campaign, a protest movement that seeks to end Israel’s occupation of Palestinian lands, and how - in response - the Jewish Board of Deputies was assured that Labour would “never accept attempts to exceptionalise and deligitimise Israel.”

  • why are people watching Qatar's state TV?

  • Because its far better than British state TV. Although perhaps not for Arab Israeli reporting.

  • Also good on African affairs too which don't really get covered in our press.

  • Its pretty useful for China news too.

    *Laughs in brexit bill*

(Which gave the govt. a ridiculous amount of leeway in making primary legislation via statutory instruments in the guise of repealing / rewriting previous EU driven legislation without having to tie parliament up forever with debating all thebthings. Although that was also done when we joined, way back, so it's not without precedent.)

  • Sorry, of course, why not.

  • Because it's funded by an illiberal abusive theocracy?

I mean, not to be all ad hominem about it, but it's worth keeping that in mind with anything that it publishes.

Particularly in reference to anything pertaining to the Israel - Palestine conflict

  • anti-semitism psyop

Do you understand how deeply offensive it is for the victims of antisemitism in Labour - I remember one guy who was under the age of 18 and found himself doxxed to Stormfront as a result of this - for you to refer to the problem and response as a 'psyop'?

Even the reprehensible document which doxxed that guy accepted that antisemitism was a genuine problem. The EHRC judgement accepted it. Even Corbyn accepted it, even if he minimised it.

Referring to it as a psyop is literally gaslighting Jewish people.

Imo it's an antisemitic statement - it effectively says Jewish people cannot be trusted to tell the truth about their own experience of antisemitism, and the implication that the media response was somehow 'controlled' is very dodgy territory given the long standing tropes about Jewish people secretly running the world. Genuinely, fix yourself up.

  • I think Al Jazeera is useful to have as an alternative voice to a lot of western press, it's generally considered to have high reporting standards and is funded a bit like channel 4 I think so should be somewhat independent of the Qatar government, but we've seen how ours tries to push channel 4 around. It's also regarded to have it's own biases, especially around Israel and Shia Muslims, so worth being aware of that if their output crosses into those subjects.

  • I appreciate the issues with supporting a channel that is part owned by Qatar but if we're playing that game i'd be boycotting pretty much every media channel. As somebody with middle eastern family, I value it as a source of news in the middle east.

Interesting observation about Al Jazeera news. The English speaking channel is typically quite left of centre in opinions and coverage but the Arabic speaking channel tends to be pretty right wing. They're pretty different to each other.

Oh, what a surprise, I wonder why that would be ?
I thought we went through the same bullshit with RT already.

  • if you bothered to watch it you'd realise your favourite reliable news source bbc is proven to be fake news in terms of the panorama coverage on the matter.

  • bbc is proven to be fake news in terms of the panorama coverage on the matter

OfCom found complaints to be unfounded, and JVL have agreed to apologise to John Ware for libelling him.

  • I don't watch BBC.

  • did you not watch the documentary either?

do you understand how deeply offensive it is to accuse a jewish person whose family has died in the holocaust for antisemitism (anti-zionism)? the report clearly states a jewish member of the party was six times more likely to be investigated for antisemitism than a non-jewish member. isn't this a bit backwards? hate to break it to you but criticizing the state of israel and its politics doesn't equal antisemitism. if you listened what the diaspora has to say you'd understand this.

do you even begin to understand how much more problematic the anti-islam rhetoric widely prevalent in the cabinets is and how much more it hurts brown/palestinian lives within the party and elsewhere? of course you don't because you're blinded by your anglo-exceptionalist status-quo-guarding tendencies.

it's not just implicated, but also proven the media response was controlled. again, you'll learn this by watching the documentary.

didn't expect this many israel bots to emerge on a cyclist forum lol.

  • Out of curiosity, where do you get your news from?

Aren't you worried about fallacy of origin?
