  • Man, why did Tudor stop making the submariner. Such a handsome watch.

  • I'm sure they just had to differentiate from the main brand, Rolex. Can't be any other reason why they were turning out the kind of watch they were known for in the oo's

  • This changed slightly with the new Pelago 39 starting to feel closer to a Rolex but still 100% Tudor.

  • I guess there's less reason to worry about affecting sales of the main brand at the moment as they can't make enough to satisfy demand by such a large margin.

I think dating back to the 70's Tudor was an option if you wanted the oyster case but couldn't afford the Rolex movement. Pretty decent option really. Now it still seems a bit confused, from the point of view of a Rolex owner.

  • Now it still seems a bit confused, from the point of view of a Rolex owner.

Not really, Rolex is hugely expensive and inaccessible, whether Tudor is moderately expensive and accessible.

If you want a Rolex, you gotta spend much more than over half the wages of nurses

  • Exactly my thoughts everytime I see one

  • That's what I'm saying. If you own a Rolex (consequently you no longer have to pay for it). The Tudor range can seem a bit confused. When it was an ETA movement in an oyster case it made sense to me.

I'm not a high earner, I'm fortunate though. I get to look maybe a little less at the cost of the watches. I'm not trying to get anyone's back up about the cost, Tudor is a decent brand but in my opinion they lost their way and have not got it back together quite completely yet. If you wonder why there's never much chatter about Tudor vs Rolex I believe it's partly because the cost comes into it so quickly.

I would just say comparing the mercedes and snowflake version of the Tudor subs that Hacha posted, the mercedes hands work to my eye and the alternative which is basically the current type are not to my taste.

  • The Kenissi-made movements aren’t really any better than the ETAs. And Tudor keep pumping the prices up. The Pelagos 39 is within £500 of the RRP of an Oyster Perpetual in 2019.

I guess they are still tracking at about half the price of the “equivalent” Rolex though.

For a while it looked like they were going to develop more of their own personality but they seem to be being reined back to being the “poor man’s Rolex”. Which was the original aim tbf.

  • Im quite partial for the Tudor Hydronauts which was a long way from being a poor man Rolex.

  • Fine, but I still see the 'poor man Rolex' as a pretty decent choice and a 1 watch choice that could see you through your life especially from a 70's man point of view. I'm sure anyone buying a Tudor Sub in the 70's wasn't really poor.

  • a long way from being a poor man Rolex.

    Cos it's shit?

  • I'd say that Tudor is the younger, trendier option.

Lots of freedom to launch new, at times slightly quirky, models. Pick up those who wouldn't want a Rolex because of the connotations or those that want something a bit more exciting without damaging the core brand.

  • I'm a bit biased but I'd say this Hydronaut is the best one

It's a great watch and would be the one I'd keep if I could only keep one watch but I'm not sure I'd say it's Rolex quality (which is probably why it only cost me about £1k).

  • A friend of mine is selling a Super Jubilee bracelet he used to wear on a 39mm OP..

Slowly considering buying it to play with the Snowflake or any 4/5 digit case..

    Not sure tough..

  • I think that's what the marketing says.

I see a range that has to look different from the iconic range when that doesn't improve the product. In the past it was accepted that it was less expensive to make the product therefore cost less but the iconic looks were still present.

Rolex connotations have little to do with the qualities of the watches.

  • If they were on black straps they'd look 100% better

  • A friend was able to get the new Pelagos. Tried it on yesterday and I have to say… it’s perfect. Want want want. The bezel looks way more normal in real life than it did in photos, too.

  • Yeah man, drop me a PM.

  • Good nato option for a 21mm lug width?

I like one stripe natos like these, but can't find anything in 21mm width.

    WatchGecko (20mm or 22mm)

    Christopher Ward Tide Strap 22mm

  • The watch gecko strap comes in a 21mm width. I've got one and it's ok especially for the money. Not a nato but Erikas come in 21mm and their nice lots with a centre line contrast but not black and gold.
