What's the ideal groupset for a do-it-all road bike? I've got a Salsa Casseroll, which is currently set up fixed, but I'm wondering whether I can rationalise my stable down to just that one bike (plus my dadbike for shopping). It would need to be able to do brisk runs out for fitness, plus some light touring, so it would need some pretty low gears for gentle ascents of steep hills.

  • are you asking groupset or gearing ?

I'd say a 1x11 shimano or sram thing with a 42 chainring and 11-40 cassette is perfectly fine for anything, if you don't mind the relatively large gear jumps

  • Well groupset really, At present I have 2x10 lightweight steel road bike (10-speed Campag Record) and an 2x5 old-school (80s - downtube friction shifters) audax/light tourer. Both have a low gear around 34x30/32. To rationalise those into one bike (no idea if it's really possible), I'd like to get at least that low, if not lower for short tours, but I'd also like something with reasonably snappy, close shifts for when I want to go and get some exercise on an unladen bike.
