There's been some pretty incredible composers working on those docs but like with most genres they get stuck in a formula that's very hard to break free from and 99% of the time it's the fault of holding music. That's why nearly every action film for the last 20 years has Han Zimmer soundalike soundtrack.
For pretty much anything the director will have a load of tracks from something in the same genre for the editor to throw on to get the 'feel', then a composer gets very little wiggle room when recreating. If a composer gets some real freedom and you do get a groundbreaking score, you'll just get the same style rinsed for the next decade. I reckon for most of the Attenborough stuff they'll just be using tracks from his previous docs for the guide tracks.
(Source for above, I am an editor, this is my life 😂)
I wasn't sure where to put this (I Hate? Drug of the Nation?) but man, I hate the soundtracks of Attenborough BBC nature docs. The TV itself is mind-blowing. but the music is so obviously the product of the same cabal of smug shirt-under-a-jumper wearing un-hipsters who have put their bloated epic choral sample wares over every series for the last twenty years. It's even worse they try to do something ethnic or funny (NB often the same in the minds of the producers I note). Cunts.
