  • He must be gutted. How many times can you give it that maximum effort and come that close to a really arbitrary barrier. At the same time it would be his name in history forever and the rest of the field so far behind. Legendary runner.

  • It'd be a huge leap to sub 2h unpaced. His pace today was under 1.2s per mile quicker than his old pb and he's full gas knife edge of blowing his doors off. Another 2.6s per mile seems barely anything (appx 8s off a parkrun time) but would be a huge leap forward.

  • 1:10 is a huge amount of time and distance, the difference between what was essentially lab conditions vs. here feeding, pace, line were all done for him in Vienna to even having to think of those thing in the real world is huge.

Comparing to me going from running at dorney lake with my own nutrition on course and zero crowds to London, carrying my own gels, crowds/congestion, registration etc it makes my 10s per mile targeted improvement look a bit ambitious! But then I have two more marathon training cycles in the legs, 3kg weight loss and hopefully the aerodynamic benefit of a large group to help!

  • He looks gutted alright.
