  • XC subs paid, £2.50 for five races this year for early payment. Bargain, especially as 2 of the fixtures are less than 2 miles from home so no travel costs.

Northern 6 stage at the Etihad next Sunday as a "fast" effort session. Fast being 20+ 5km as evidenced yesterday. 2019 was sub 18, defo feeling getting older.

(I appreciate everything is relative, just processing the decline here... pass me the bottle.)

  • Used a pair not long ago, but they were too minimal and I prefer something more padded around the upper. They do have the Parkclaw and its a "5" width, but unfortunately an 8mm drop which is too steep for me.
I may have to resort to custom made shoes 😂

  • Anyone else “on here” doing the London marathon this year?

Training all in the bank now, feel like I’ve had a pretty decent campaign with pbs at 10k (36:40) and half marathon (1:20:57) both slightly short of the mark for my initial 2:50 target but pretty close and I’ve got plenty of volume in with 7 or 8, 60 mile weeks along the way, so I’ll see what happens on the day, but definitely planning on being conservative! Just 2 weeks to freshen up, hopefully for my feet to heal up a bit as the blister I got running the half hasn’t really properly healed yet…

  • 7 or 8, 60 mile weeks along the way

Sounds a solid base for 2:50, good luck.

  • Doing it virtually, up and down Orient Way, E10. My twins are away at Beavers, my daughter is having friends over for a sleepover (10th birthday) so I've been sent to Thurrock Travelodge for the night. There isn't even tea and coffee making facilities in the room. Ho ho ho.

I have to get the twins from their Beavers thing at midday too.

I haven't trained well due to heatwave, lack of interest, illness and injury, but I'll settle with under 4 hours of misery up and down the A road after a terrible night in a bad hotel.

    Good luck Ed!

  • Could try the Brooks Cascadia? They do a wide fit but not sure if they'd meet all your requirements.

  • I tried the NB fresh foam Hierro and it felt good (I have wideish feet) but I had to change them as the it rubbed on my ankle. The side felt high.
Which was a shame as it felt like a good shoe but my fat ankles put pay them

  • CNBA trying to train properly whilst looking after a 1 year-old so I'll be spectating this year. Looks like your training's gone very well and there's nothing like a preparatory PB or two to give you confidence in the big one, especially during the race itself when you're wondering if you can keep things going.

All the best, I'm sure you'll smash it.

  • I’m not running it but keen to see how it goes. Similar season for me, and new and very similar PB’s at 10k (36:30) and HM (1:20:37) so I’m curious how that translates to longer distance for you.

Got a 70.3 next month that I should be in good shape for, but I’ve also not actually done any triathlon specific training, and very few bike rides outdoors, so who knows quite how the legs will feel halfway into the run.

  • I've actually got the NB V6 hierro model as my everyday trainer. Very comfortable, but I imagine the upper would wear out quickly.
It's an 8mm drop which is quite steep, but may consider it an option.
I've opted for a wide fit hoka speedgoat 4.
I used to have a pair of speedgoat 2, but they burst on the inside where the upper meets the sole pretty quickly, so I'm hoping they're made of better stuff now, and that maybe the wider fit will help with that?

  • NB fresh foam Hierro

..have those as well (more for casual roaming around & working not trailrunning, mind) really like them, very durable and look awesome as well 👍

I have wide-ish feet as well and they're alright, not as comfy as the more sock-like running models from NB though (the Hierros upper is a bit firmer, but still nice).

  • FWIW, inov8s, even their advertised "wide" fit, are not that wide in my experience. I had a pair of the previous version of these https://www.inov-8.com/trailfly-g-270-mens-trail-running-shoe, and found it pretty tight across the forefoot as a wide-footed hobbit

  • Yeah that's why I had to switch them tbe more sturdy upper just rubbed on my ankle ball bit. NB running stuff is great just got a pair of the 2 in 1 shorts 1st time trying a pair and really surprised kn how comfy they are.

  • Not tried any hokas yet but see more and more people with them might try them next pair.👍

  • Will give you a quick run down when they arrive 😂.

Unfortunately, most of my running shoe issues come within 300km, so I'll be happy if they last beyond that.
Currently my Saucony Peregrine 12s are at 322km, and have started showing where my feet are going to burst through. They'll be lucky to make it 450km.

  • This is an interesting graphic about preparation for success at long events, from Spine Sunmer Challenger winner Tim.

  • To follow up on a question I asked a few pages back re burst air bubbles in alpha flys, after a bit of back and forth I have a new pair on their way to me now.

Long story short, initially sportsshoes said not their problem, talk to nike, Nike customer services said not our problem talk to sports shoes, but a ray of hope was gained when I went to the Nike store and they said they would replace them if I’d bought direct. So after a whinge on twitter sports shoes agreed to inspect and now after a bit of a delay with inpost getting them back to them I was contacted and offered a replacement this afternoon!

Sadly they aren’t the original prototype colourway that was lovely, or even the quite nice minty green ones, but the pretty vomit enducing orange ones, but considerably better than a punctured pair of shoes!

  • On the subject of shoes, I've been out of the game for a few years and will need to buy a new pair of road shoes soon. Why are they now all so fucking hideous?

  • Carbon plates and loads of bouncy foam

You can still get sensible looking ones. Just the quickest are fairly silly looking. Though I’ve got used to everyone lining up with them so they look fairly normal now on race day.

  • Ugh. I'm just about to do this over a pair of goretex Terrex R9 that leaked and fell apart in <300km. I started with Adidas but they've just ignored me. Not sure sportshoes will be any better.

Dog shit trail shoes. Sole coming away from upper....tread worn out...gore Tex liner leaking...split in sole too.

I feel a bit of a plonker...every mountain runner I mentioned it to was basically all like "yeah...what did you expect? Terrex shoes are made of paper".

  • So the Hoka One One Speedgoats arrived, and were very quickly packaged up and sent back.

I'm a UK 11, measured more or less bang on. I would need to size up at least once in Hoka, so a UK 12.
Unfortunately, the width was still far too tight, and this was the 'wide' model of the speedgoat, so I'm not even going to bother with the next size up, and instead get money back.

I've settled on Nike Wildhorse 6. Mad looking trainer. They're an 8mm drop which is steeper than I'd like and they're not necessarily that wide fitting, but with 30% off ticketed price at a local Nike store, £55 was too good to pass up. So even if they do burst after 300km, it won't be too much of a loss.

My current Saucony Peregrine 12s are 330km in, only two months, bursting at the toes, and tread completely worn down, and they were £130, and lot less of shoe than what the peregrine 10s were.

Bring back the old Saucony xodus iso!

  • First run since I partially ruptured my ACL, and first run since Covid today. Went better than expected- ran 5k and then walked 2.5 to cool down. Epic eh?

  • Great news! How long were you out for?
I ruptured my ACL July 2021 and likely getting reconstructive surgery, finally, in December. I've still been running though, was only out for 2 months after initial injury 🤷🏻‍♂️

  • Nice I like the wildhorse. Might give them ago also. The pegasus trails I have have solid plastic eye let's that don't flex and dig in your foot.those wildhorse have the flexi eyelets .

    Hope they last for you

  • On trail shoe chat both my pegasus trails are done one pair has no cushioning left the other not much grip. I've got a pair of endorphin trails but not that into them which is disappointing as I'm a big fan of the rest of the endorphin range. Fancy giving these a go though https://www.nike.com/gb/t/zoomx-zegama-trail-running-shoes-txKtct
And I've heard good things about the Salomon ultra glide
