Good data, thank you! The intention is to have 1 gear for local (flat, muddy) and getting out to the Peak District (Dark Lane & Middlewood Way) and another for bimbling about in and on the hills when I get to them..
2.6 30:21 = 42.45" (Po krampus)
2.8 32:21 = 45.73" (Po too steep)
From this it looks like the numbers are in the right ballpark? From what I've found out touring on the surly, when I'm up on the tops on singletrack etc I just bimble about in a v low gear, hence the 28:20

2.4 32:16 = 58.58"
2.4 28:20 = 41"
2.4 30:21 = 41.88" (atk km - guessed tyre size)
