  • I've just spent two months in Austria and it has been a stark demonstration of how shit things are in the UK.

Living standards are better. Things are cheaper and despite being a pretty right wing conservative countey they have adults in charge who make long term policies to benefit the people rather than win votes.

The political and social attituse is just completely different. Not saying they are perfect by any stretch but seeing a nation invest in itself and develop its own interests rather than the interests of party donors is super jarring for me right now.

  • A good example is their "Climate Bonus" scheme.

In a nutshell, independent auditors assess the nation's porformance in reducing emissions, recycling, green energy etc etc on a regional basis. These are given a financial value, partly from trading carbon credits and sale of recycled materials and every person in the country is given an annual bonus depending on how well their region do.

This year, every person in the country will be getting 500 euros paid into their bank account just for how well the country did 0n green initiatives last year. There will be league tables. It encourages people to take personal responsibility and monitor each other. It's progressive and effective.

On the industry side of things...Austria, a nation with a population half that of London, has a manufacturer of dishwashers, washing machines and other appliances that outsells any of the European giants. This is because the Austrian government has created economic conditions that favour Austrian businesses and a desire to buy Austrian without slamming the door on the EU. It's refreshing to see.

They also have a 50 year bi-partisan energy security plan which should, in theory, outlast any change of government

  • Not to mention that time in 2019 when a govenment minister was caught offering favours to a Russian and when caught the entire government resigned in disgrace and immediately called a general election.

  • That's the punishment for thinking rollerblading is cool

  • Yeah, that was a totally an appropriate use of force .
    "led away by officers" 🙄

  • Totally inappropriate. Cunts.

  • Cunts indeed.

  • Totally inappropriate

He was going straight towards the car containing the head of state, the lead motorbike is the guy doing al the whistling, SEG use whistles not sirens (I can’t stand the royal family but even I can see that would be recognised as a potential threat.) I think being stopped roller blading directly into a secure convoy with armed escorts by being bundled onto the ground , which is not a particularly severe use of force, is a reasonable use of force.

I remember reading an interview with those police bikers in a bike magazine years back, their job is to stop you getting at their high risk subject and the convoy won’t stop to discuss your roller blading choices. One was explaining how a biker had to hit a car that was coming towards the convoy to stop it in the past. If the copper hadn’t grabbed roller boy I suspect the bikers would’ve rammed him or worse.

  • Good job they made sure to securely pin his head to the ground (excellent use of gripping the hair) so he didn't shoot his eye lasers at the car. You can even see when they're leading him away that they predict he'll shoot eye lasers at the back of the convoy so the officer with his hand on the back of the guys neck points his head downwards.

  • Jet Grind Radio has a lot to answer for

  • Jet set radio?

Or you got some 18+ version? ;)

Getting someone to stay on the ground to get control of them - control their head and it’s very difficult for their body to get up and fight you.

  • Surely that's a technique to stop someone moving?

The head is a smallish easily held body part with no muscular strength. If you hold someones head down the rest of their body is likely to follow.

I think you've got to be realistic about the physically that goes with an arrest in that situation.

  • There was a cop for each limb, I think pinning his head to the pavement was excessive and a panicked move (or just trained into their little brains)

What was the realistic threat of him holing his head upright when they were wheeling him off?
I get that most cops probably don't know much about roller blades but I can't see what the thinking was that led to the cop jerking his neck down like that

  • control their head and it’s very difficult for them to call someone "bro"

  • Ah Well they're just smelly poopy heads and I'm glad the guy wasn't actually nicked.

Rollerblader terrorism though, maybe they have special intel, who knows🤷‍♀️

  • I get that most cops probably don't know much about roller blades but I can't see what the thinking was that led to the cop jeering his neck down like that

Take the rollerblades out the equation, and let's assume this guy was running towards the head of state - is the police reaction over the top still?

  • Jet Grind Radio was the name for Jet Set Radio in the US

  • The bit you've quoted, is me talking about the convoy having passed.
Do I think someone on foot will catch the car on foot?
I actually give better odds to the Rollerblades

  • Damn son, that's me told. Wonder what the deal was there.

  • Everyone's got a right to an opinion I guess.

The rational of holding someone's head to excersise control over their movements, seems pretty straight forward.

The risk isn't of moving his head, the risk is of him moving the rest of his body.

Also it's not like policing is a risk free job.

  • I can understand people having a different position on the pinned head. The later bit was just a piss take imo. Maybe it has a reasonable explanation.

  • Until they've removed him to somewhere secure, and they're sure of his motives (for all the police know, he could have been targeting the crowds, not the king) they're within their right to keep him under control - pushing head down

I'm absolutely not defending the police, they have huge issues that need dealing with internally, I'm just saying I think these actions are quite proportionate given who they're being asked to protect

  • All this discussion has done is reinforce how silly rollerblading looks
