• "Heav'n has no Rage, like Love to Hatred turn'd, Nor Hell a Fury, like a Woman scorn'd." in the 1697 play The Mourning Bride (Act III Scene 2) by William Congreve.

The "hath" is a hypercorrection based on false chronological assumption and perception that the saying is ancient, dating to at least the grammar of Early Modern English (which the time of writing would be at the end of); this is also reinforced by the phrase often being falsely attributed to Shakespeare.

    Just saying.

    GLWS though

  • Interesting, thank you. I had indeed always thought the saying came from Shakespeare. I must say I am definitely no fan of Congreve though, having been made to sit through one of his ‘comedies’ as a grumpy teenager.

I suppose it’s a bit like “the proof is in the pudding” in that regular misquoting of a commonly used phrase replaces the original. I find that one particularly annoying.

Anyway, it really is a great bike and would suit anyone of the correct size, as long as they can live with the incorrectly rendered name on the top tube!

    EDIT: now SOLD!
