I'm also still attempting to cut my own hair - after several years of mixed results, the one golden tip I would give any budding self-barbarist is:
Don't bother fannying about with different grades on the sides & back and trying to blend it all in, it's a pain in the arse - just take it all in as close & as high as you like then hack into the big overhanging ledge of barnet with a cheap pair of thinning scissors, it'll blend in eventually.
