It's not so much the telescope that's a bad idea as the stupid-long seatpost however you achieve it. The frame is designed for a certain bending moment where the post enters the seat lug, adding a post longer than the frame designer intended can overload this junction.
Understood. This is a 20" wheel shopper bike. seems common to run with a long post. Id assumed dropping a long 31.8 post beyond the top tube junction, then adding an inserted long smaller post would give the frame more support as I've effectively reinforced the whole seatube?
There's long and long; how long do want to go? I've survived with 365mm out of the frame (500mm overall length) but that's with stout seat stays and top tube meeting right at the top of the seat tube.
I've gone for a total length of 50cm here. Not sure how much is poking out of the frame but definitely inserted past the 'limit' mark. Will probably go a touch lower. I wanted an aluminium post but struggled with that length. I think this steel one was from eBay, can't actually remember.
