They can be, take a bit of breaking in and getting used to, to get comfortable.

Look into Erika or the fake one, way more comfortable and easier to wear.

Agree. I would be in the market for a NATO-alike that doesn't have the fabric band that sits under the case. Presumably there's some horological reason why such a thing can't exist.

And single pass NATO, but still lifts the thickness of the strap (rather than 2x)

It's perfect because it's a very, very close reproduction of the original design. Would love to own one some day. As I said, grail piece. The 3-watch 55th anniversary collection pops up occasionally on C24. It also includes a near-perfect 62GS remake.
