Just phone the provider/debt collector? Presumably had to provide readings? There was outstanding debt on my meters when I moved in and the providers reset it.

IANAL but I think you are allowed to open post delivered to someone else your address if you have a reasonable excuse? Getting in touch with the sender to correct their mistake sounds pretty reasonable for me.

We keep getting letters from debt collectors addressed to the previous owner of the house, who left c.£300 debt on the meters when we got the keys. I've tried returning to sender with a note to say 'not here/sold house December 2021' but no change. Also messaged the estate agents as there were hundreds of other letters too (absent landlord).
Continue to ignore them/indefinitely put them in a pile in the meter cupboard? Send email to debt collection firm (haven't opened letters, but can see through the plastic window/if i hold up to the light)?
for all the paperwork involved in buying/selling a house, seems bonkers that you can get away with not proving there's no outstanding debts like this.
