  • We keep getting letters from debt collectors addressed to the previous owner of the house, who left c.£300 debt on the meters when we got the keys. I've tried returning to sender with a note to say 'not here/sold house December 2021' but no change. Also messaged the estate agents as there were hundreds of other letters too (absent landlord).

Continue to ignore them/indefinitely put them in a pile in the meter cupboard? Send email to debt collection firm (haven't opened letters, but can see through the plastic window/if i hold up to the light)?

for all the paperwork involved in buying/selling a house, seems bonkers that you can get away with not proving there's no outstanding debts like this.

  • Just phone the provider/debt collector? Presumably had to provide readings? There was outstanding debt on my meters when I moved in and the providers reset it.

  • IANAL but I think you are allowed to open post delivered to someone else your address if you have a reasonable excuse? Getting in touch with the sender to correct their mistake sounds pretty reasonable for me.
