  • Not sure how I feel about applying that cinematic crop to images. It’s either adding a fake movie look with no foresight or it’s actually affected how I’m looking at stuff in camera, which is of course the preferred option.
Just wary of getting into some slightly contrived territory by the tail wagging the dog.

Shouldn't you be familiar with them already I think you might enjoy Ming Thein's posts on the topic, the classic Defining Cinematic is probably a good start 👍

  • Didn’t realise he’d written about that, thanks.

That said, I really can’t stand him. His stuff is all so clinical and seems to be completely gear-centric and about “technical image quality”, which is where photography goes to die (I do realise the irony of saying that, looking at the things I take pictures of).
Also, those images he uses as examples don’t really looks like stills from video.
He doesn’t even work on video stuff!

  • New page, needs photos.

  • Yeah, to be frank I also found the way he writes quite technical sometimes, but had to admit a lot of the images are really strong - also in a poetic / in an emotional way, after seeing that I did read his words a little bit differently if that makes sense.

  • Ok, I trust you judgement - will give him a second chance.

  • I don't see anything cinematic in those images, cinematic to me is all about control of the mood an atmosphere. In photography maybe diCorcia, Crewdson or Hido as the typical ones.
Thein looks like travel snaps with a crop.

  • Print arrived from the printspace recommended by @Well_is_it

    Good price and speedy too.

Apologies for terrible picture of it

  • Just found a Sony Hahnel wireless trigger in the bottom of a drawer that I missed when I flogged all my sony kit and moved to Fuji, £15 anyone? Can deliver to central and east.

@Velocio maybe now you've got the fancy a74?

  • Where’s good to get a dslr cleaned, Sw London / Vauxhall? It’s an old Nikon d50, few spots appear on the images. I leave it at our place in Ireland to save me lugging a camera over so it’s a bit of a nuisance if the images are spoilt

  • Wishing I'd climbed over the fence to get a better view of the washing machine/ cones arrangement but hey there's always next time.

  • Nice! Definitely climb that fence.

  • Looks great - pleased with the result?

  • Yeah very happy. Would definitely use them again

  • I've already got a wireless remote, sorry.

  • If it’s just the sensor clean, do it yourself. Kits like this are good, watch a YouTube tutorial just to watch someone talk you through it first though.

Will is right though, Fixation are the best for fixing cameras. However you pay a premium for this. And they have an annoying police that they fix every fault they find, or nothing.

  • No worries. Anyone else? Also found a Godox X-Pro Sony mount flash trigger, if anyone wants?

  • Advice I saw recently was to use an eye-make-up brush. I have to say, I have been struggling to buy one though, waiting until I'm home from holiday and was thinking of ordering on amazon or something. This was the thread I was reading: https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/54989335 - I particularly liked the analogy of a dirty sensor being liked a dirty windscreen on a car :-D

  • Unknowingly the last metal gig at the local pub, after this the new landlord said no more and pulled the plug on all forthcoming gigs :(

    Calligram - Prosthetic Records

Instagram edits - look poop on big screens. Tbh I have no idea how to adjust photos, I don't think my pc screen is up to it, like mixing music through a pair of £10 earbuds.

    Canon 6D + 50mm.

  • Yeah, first one!

  • First two are ace, but last one where they kind of look like they are sharing a mic is not without merit

  • Chucked a terrible 60mm Holga plastic lens on the old Nikon D40

Absolutely awful, no real focus options, so dark, extreme vignette.

Worth all of the £15 it probably cost me, much fun.

  • It’s a nice effect - I bet it would do some cool stuff pointed at the sun or strong light sources.

  • Quite pleased with this one.

  • I don't know if this is the right thread ... but where do folks store all their photos, especially in a world where many many images are made on phones?

I currently have a Lightroom sub, and store anything RAW in there, (including stuff shot on my iPhone through Halide). I then use Apple Photos for everything else, and export edited Lightroom files there too so it is the most complete library. But it is all a ball-ache, having two places to edit based on the image type, and having to pay for Lightroom for a shrinking amount of new photos.

I've considered going all in on Apple Photos but the editing is shite, and/or trying to augment it with Darkroom, but it all seems a bit much.
