• A little update, will try and add more when feeling a little less lazy. Currently on the Marne, slowly heading towards Paris. Have been living onboard for a month now and life is good. Travelled south and east from the Somme, through Reims and the champagne region. Was hoping to get onto the Champagne-Bourgogne canal in Vitry Le Francois but it was closed due to water shortages and not due to open until mid-October so decided to go through Paris and will then go up the Seine and onto the Yonne. After that there are a couple of options to the med but all currently closed. Will probably park the boat for the winter somewhere on the Yonne. I’ve got 6 weeks left in Europe before I have to get a visa (seriously, fuck brexit) and I quite fancy spending the winter cycling somewhere hot so we’ll see what happens. The French canals and rivers have been absolutely lovely. It’s a very cheap way to travel, the only expenses being petrol / about 4 litres a day, baguettes, wine and cheese. It’s also incredibly quiet. In a month of travelling along, on 7 or so rivers and canals I have seen about 25 other pleasure/leisure cruisers, 50ish commercial barges and a few hotel boats. It’s a amazing how under used these waterways are. There’s also been some very nice bike rides. The champagne region, especially between Reims and Epernay and the upper reaches of the Marne valley is hilly!
