  • Not sure how I feel about applying that cinematic crop to images. It’s either adding a fake movie look with no foresight or it’s actually affected how I’m looking at stuff in camera, which is of course the preferred option.
Just wary of getting into some slightly contrived territory by the tail wagging the dog.

These were out-takes from the weekly comp.

Shouldn't you be familiar with them already I think you might enjoy Ming Thein's posts on the topic, the classic Defining Cinematic is probably a good start 👍

  • Didn’t realise he’d written about that, thanks.

That said, I really can’t stand him. His stuff is all so clinical and seems to be completely gear-centric and about “technical image quality”, which is where photography goes to die (I do realise the irony of saying that, looking at the things I take pictures of).
Also, those images he uses as examples don’t really looks like stills from video.
He doesn’t even work on video stuff!

  • I don't see anything cinematic in those images, cinematic to me is all about control of the mood an atmosphere. In photography maybe diCorcia, Crewdson or Hido as the typical ones.
Thein looks like travel snaps with a crop.
