  • What are the options for slightly changing the gearing on a 6 speed Brompton? I often find that 4th is too low for general flattish rides, and 5th is a bit too high. That wouldn’t be so much of an issue if the 4th to 5th shift, the shift I make most often, didn’t involve both derailleur and hub changes.

Just live with it or is there a straightforward change of cog or chainring that might shift the whole range so that the most used shift is just the derailleur?

  • according to this Brompton Gear Calculator , the stock 6 speed ratios are 33 - 40 - 51 - 63 - 81 - 99". For example, if you changed for the stock option 44t chainring, it would give you 29 - 35 - 45 - 56 - 71 - 87", so then your cruising gear is a nice-for-round-town 71", you gain a lower granny gear, but you lose your top gear.

  • Thanks ibob. Trying a few options in that calculator, changing to a 44T does seem like the simplest option, reducing the number of hub gear changes I make. I would probably miss 99 slightly more than 33, but overall it would probably suit me better for relatively little outlay. Cheers.
