  • Looks 👌.

will probably need a beefier back wheel

I reckon as long as your spoke tension is good and the wheel’s in fair shape you’ll be grand!

  • Omnium cxc v1 just got back in shape and 40mm tires

  • Does anyone know anything about the Gary Fisher Triton?

I'm looking to build a new single speed audax/credit card tourer. And this on paper ticks a quite boxes. But I don't know anything about it.

  • It's nothing special, just a crmo fixie made in Taiwan... It's from when Trek already took over Gary Fisher

  • Solid bikes tho

  • I had one. Still regret selling it sometimes. Replaced it with a pompino which was probably a mistake as the Triton geometry felt much better for general road use. It just unflashy but just worked and handled well

  • Mini bank holiday project - I stripped the axle thread on my velosteel coaster back in May, making my usual commuting bike unrideable. I've had a replacement hub sitting around for ages but no time or space to fit it until today. I left the shell in and just swapped the guts over, shifting the hub on the axle as well so the wheel sits more centrally. Still got to replace the bar tape but should be an easy job sometime this week then finally I can ride to work with a bit of oomph.

  • Worth a punt or na? It's hard to get frames in sizes that I need for the purpose I want. And @MCamb too?

  • I would go for it

  • Yes if it ticks your other boxes

  • I've got a '99 CAAD4 frame (the one in purpleen 🤤) that I'm planning on building into a 650b gravel jobber. Ideally, with external bb and a sub compact crankset.
But it's a Mtb, so road crank spindles wouldn't work? Are there any bb standards that would allow a longer spindle to be fitted to road cranks? Would that even work? Are there any Mtb cranksets that fit the bill that don't look too MTBy?
Is this just a wild goof trek and should I sack it off and just run it 1x (already have a 1x and a tracklocross thing in the works so more gears would be nice)?

Apologies for alllllll the questions. Any advice would be very VERY gratefully received.

  • Middleburn cranks dont look very MTB-y

  • Completely forgot they did x-type! Thanks., that might be the one. Bit spenny. 😬

  • But it's a Mtb, so road crank spindles wouldn't work?

What's the shell width? If it's 68mm, you only have to worry about chainring clearance to the chainstays. Shimano FC-T4060 fits 68mm and 73mm shells, bin the inner ring and you have a choice of 48/36 and 44/32, 3 crank lengths and two colours, fits old fashioned 104mm/4-bolt rings so you'll be able to get aftermarket replacements until the heat death of the universe, 50mm chainline on the middle ring £59 from Spa

  • It's 68. Thanks, they're definitely a more affordable option than the middleburns. Shape is decent. I just find it difficult to get particularly enthused about 4 ring set ups. Which would rule out pretty much all modern cranks. Not a deal breaker though. Was thinking more at least 105/slx level for this build hopefully.

  • I'm building up my new mtb :)

  • Is there some kind of adapter to mount fenders on tru axle forks w/o fender mounts. I have three zits on each leg but none by the axle.

  • My trusty Brother, I’ve used this to ride to work for the past few years, sadly I don’t really need a bike like this anymore, starting to gather cobwebs, could do with something with larger tyres and higher bars, so last pic before I swap some things around I think

    Edit: hmmm

  • New Honjo fenders could work out quite nice.

Having the BQ/Jan Heine tutorial and I know about the trick with the boule ball. Any other hints/tricks on mounting?

  • Haha, nope. Was also my initial thought, but so far everyone recommended not using one on them - as they could introduce a point of failure leading to a crack within months.
