  • Maybe I'll give it a go, not much to lose!

  • you have nothing to lose but your chains :)

  • Asking for a pal. He's wanting to do a tour (Wales 80% lanes) on his mtb but wants a slick/semislick tyre for his 29" wheels. What's the forum choice of tyre for such an eventuality?

  • Schwalbe Smart Sams? I had a pair of them on a tour around Dorset a few years back and were excellent. Fast enough on the road, lovely and grippy on the off road.

Maybe not quite slick enough though? Schwalbe Hurricane could be a good alternative, or Halo Twin Rail?

  • no, too fragile

  • Ta, will pass this on.

  • I did 5551 miles on the Pirelli Cinturato Velo in 35c and had 2 punctures (still life left).

One was while tubeless and fixed itself. They are heavy as road tyres but light as touring tyres.

  • I concur they're heavy as road tyres, I really didn't like them on the winter bike, they felt very sluggish, would be good for a tourer.

I rate Michelin Power Pro Tubeless as the best all round tyre. Plenty quick enough and really tough, I get 5000+ miles from them and have only had one puncture across 4 sets over the last few years.

  • Gp5000 tr the most expensive pee stop ever over a glass shard today spadging latex all over myself . That must be the shortest time between air in and air out apart from a tube pinch installing! Did seal with 10psi to go 😩

  • I’m after a couple of sets of 650b tyres.
First a pair of road plus 47mm (?) what options are there that don’t cost the earth?
Next, are Maxxis Ardent EXO 2.25” any good as an XC type tyre? Or are there better options?
Oh they’re for the MS and will be on 26mm rims.
    Ta

  • Got a pair of WTB Horizons for sale, if you're interested DM me.

  • Bugger! Liz saw a pair in my basket and has order them for me, but cheers anyway.

  • Any info on Pirelli P7 Sport? Could get a pretty good deal on a pair. For casual riding.
    24-622

  • No problem.
    She seems like a keeper!

  • How are WTB exposure 36c in terms of tubeless and puncture resistance? The reviews on Wiggle are not great

  • I had some for commuting and they were pretty good for tubeless and wear. Grip wasn't the best and they weren't the fastest but they did the job for cheap

  • I had a pretty poor experience of these tyres, plenty of punctures & really poor grip in the wet. Were dead cheap for a time though.

  • Thanks, this is valuable intel. How do they compare with Gravelking slicks 38c? Just as bad?
Alternatives with similar width, slick thread and better compound?

  • What's the 26" tyre of choice for a mix of commuting and bashing about Epping Forest and the like, but not doing anything too gnarly

  • Any recommendations for a tubeless tire for bikepacking on a 29er internal 30mm rim (so I think 2 up to 2.4 wide)? Main requirement is fit and forget, not painfully slow on tarmac but with enough tread to go off-road for long stretches. Ta!

  • Is there much of a difference between tubeless tyre sealants or are they all pretty similar? I've never gone tubeless before so haven't got a clue what to look for really! Will be used on a road bike with 32c tyres if that makes much of a difference.

  • Some are just milky latex, others have bits in (which I think are supposed to fill holes better).
I've been fine just using the milky stuff, Stans is what my lbs has, so I just use that.

  • I've had a good run with Kenda Small Block Eight. Mix of commuting, and some off-road stuff. Cope well with mixed terrain but not good for proper wet/muddy conditions and definitely not SFAB.

  • Stans race is thicker and clog's valves but all pretty similar.
