  • I've worn my albion ultralight jacket with a rain coat over the top.. that feels like a totally acceptable use of both

  • Untwist your knickers people.
the brevet ‘jacket’ is an alpha insulating layer which you could wear over a thin base layer, for a 6ft 64kg beanpole with no blubber it’s not enough in the winter on 2-3hr road rides.
as stated i really feel it on my shoulders and knees (basically bone close to the skin with not much fat or blood flow) my core runs hot if have too many layers.
Thats’s what’s good about the brevet, it keeps the shoulders and upper arm warm with low bulk /weight.

something like a castelli Alpha Ros + base layer would probably do the job, i don’t have one, i have a warm insulation layer that covers the right areas, for 5º and below i could do with something else over the top that keeps the showers off and a bit of windchill out without being a rustly sweat bag of £300 fragile shake dry.

  • Hey this is #jackettalk which is a wonderful place where all are welcome! Personally the Pro Team Jacket 2015(ish) is what I ride in everything below like 7 degrees long and it's perfect, nearly undefeated. All I meant was for example I've had to add an extra layer underneath it now. But there are other interesting layering options out there. One jacket to rule them all doesnt have it be it?

  • Ordered a jersey in the sale but Evri (Hermes) is fucking about. Went: “we’ve got it > it’s at our depot> there’s a problem > it’s on its way back to sender”. They didn’t attempt delivery.

Any point in visiting the store to whinge / see if I can just pick it up there? Wanted it for a trip next week

  • I very much doubt it. Best bet would be customer service live chat in the morning.
Ask about store stock and then get a voucher/refund and go buy in store

  • That’s interesting, how come? Cos it looks like a bin bag? I have one of their hiking jackets made from shakedry and it’s brilliant

  • I'm not sure of the reasoning tbh, I'm no longer in the industry. They initially said they were discontinuing it from 2024 or something but then suddenly changed their mind and dropped it immediately.

  • They're pretty good on the phone too if you prefer

  • I can't find any citations on this but I feel like I read that it might have something to do with the toxicity of the DWR used? Does that sound crazy? The presence of PFAS might've been the issue. Maybe.

Edit: this might've been why? https://toxicfreefuture.org/press-room/gore-tex-manufacturer-announces-availability-of-new-pfas-free-membrane-but-still-uses-forever-chemicals-to-make-its-outdoor-apparel-and-gear/

    And here:

    https://www.gore-tex.com/sustainability/protect-the-planet/reduce-chemical-impacts

'Gore has identified a group of PFCs as being of environmental concern. These PFCs of Environmental Concern (PFCEC) are highly fluorinated, small enough to be bioavailable, and persistent. Although not all PFCs of Environmental Concern are hazardous, they do have the potential to become widely dispersed in water, where they will remain for multiple generations. Therefore, Gore Fabrics has established goals to eliminate them from the life cycle of our consumer fabrics products.'

Yeah, pretty sure that they actually put their money where their mouth is - somewhat - and this is why it was discontinued.

  • Really - discontinued for good or being replaced or what? Might snap up a castelli idro while they're still available as had been wavering a bit back when it still rained occasionally...

  • That rings a bell yeah, I think you're right

  • I don't think they have anything else as breathable at the moment though I'm sure they're working desperately on it

  • Currently standing in pissing rain watching beads of forever chemical tainted water roll off the aforementioned shakedry jacket. Guess it’s been made so it’s better to wear it…

  • Annoyingly I lost mine/it was stolen from work so I'll be sweating in my race cape this morning.

Don't forget to not wear a backpack with it!

  • Ha, I bought one from Merlin last night 😁

Was quite disappointed not to have it for the ride in this morning 😞

  • Assos Mille jacket - they’re available in different weights (mine is “Spring/Fall”). When it’s not deep winter, but cold, I combine it with varying thickness jerseys underneath depending on temperature.

Genuinely the best couple hundred quid I’ve spent, when it comes to cycling clothes. It’s barely off my back between October and April.

  • I had one, wore it once and got cold shoulders gave it back (long story involving doing some work via a third party for the Assos store) never got round to changing it for the winter weight one. I might see if my friend still has it and try it with the brevet underneath.
He did say at the time to try it with a winter weight assos base layer but i have loads of rapha merino and didn’t want to buy synthetic.

  • Sounds like you rate it, but, that combination, to me, sounds like a recipe for trapped moisture - The insulated jacket creating body heat and then that turning into sweaty condensation when it can't escape through the wind jacket.

For variable weather riding from day to cold evening, personally, I'd have a suitable base layer and jersey then pack one jacket for later on. Also, I'm a big fan of a two way zip, so that you don't have to take layers off, you can just undo them and regulate your temp that way.

  • Pro Team wind jacket does this well with a mesh back and two way zip on the front. Very useful bit of kit IMO. Basically a long sleeve gilet.

  • i second this, more generally the traditonnal approach to layering.

Nothing beats a perfectly sized gilet ( lightweight/wind/rain depending on conditions, rain shell if constant rain ) over an adequate jersey (regular, merino, etc.), over an appropriate baselayer.

  • Have you tried one of the Albion burners? Obviously not wind/ water proof but if you pair it with a good outer layer it makes an amazing difference to body temperature. I have raynauds so can struggle to keep my hands and feet warm. Using a burner to keep my core warm makes a massive difference in keeping the extremities comfortable.

It’s been a longtime coming that this topic is now acknowledged.

  • Is Paramo going to enter cycling?
