  • Got two for my birthday. One classic and one of the looser cut for wearing over body armour. They are made better than Pendleton shirts - much tighter stitching and pattern matching. And the sleeves are longer.

  • Cheers. I will pop into poundland and see what they have.

  • Anyone know how to fuck off the Prime delivery shit? I accidentally clicked their stupid TRAP button and now I can't choose normal slow, paid delivery. It's just got Prime bullshit

  • If you complain that you were hoodwinked they refund you. I had prime for months without realising. Probably only works the first time.

  • Well reminded Hippy.
    I'd forgotten about it again.

    Cancelled :)

  • I wasn't hoodwinked. I've been carefully avoiding that shit for years. I may have been more drunk than usual and immediately noticed a need to shit on a bald rich guy

  • Reported to the moderators for baldism.

  • This isn't a question but just noticed a government consultation on units and measures closes tomorrow: https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/choice-on-units-of-measurement-markings-and-sales

    Example question:

If you had a choice, would you want to purchase items
    (i) in imperial units?
(ii) in imperial units alongside a metric equivalent?

(Is it just me or is there a third option missing there?!) It's quite a short form if anyone fancies it.

  • 3b. Are you more likely to shop from businesses that sell in imperial units?
    Yes
    No
    Not sure

No; I would actively avoid them on the basis that the proprietors were fucking idiots.

I would make a single exception for pubs; I don’t care if they serve me 568ml of beer when I ask for a pint.

    ——
I’m fuming after filling that in, what a shitshow

  • I hate that I wasted about 20 mins of my life filling that in. Nice opportunity to vent at the stupidity of things like ounces being completely unrelated to fluid ounces (the UK fluid ounces, not the US fluid ounces of course) and the seemingly arbitrary multiples involved in going between gallons (not the US ones, again), pints, cups, (fluid) ounces. Or pounds, stone, (non-fluid) ounces for that matter.

    Still, brexit "opportunities"!

What a fucking waste of time any money.

  • It's all about play-acting with these cunts.

  • I'm fine with either set of units, and beyond defining standards the government can fuck off and leave it to businesses whether to display one, the other or both, but most of the flag shaggers are too ignorant to know that Imperial measures were actually redefined in terms of SI units at some point. My first copy of BS308 gave the conversion of the inch as 25.399...mm, but the inch is now officially exactly 25.4mm

  • You're fine with both sets of units because you are a clever person who also grew up using the daft things. I have vague memories of the stupid units as a child and I'm nearly 40, anything Imperial instantly confuses me just because I never had to grow up using it, and have had mercifully little contact with it since, most people 45ish and below are the same. Stuff should have to be sold in sensible metric measures and just as they always have been able to, people can also put whatever daft archaic measurement alongside it they wish. Pints and miles excluded obviously.

  • yeah man i'm over 40 and i have no idea what fluid ounces are and how they relate or don't to non-fluid ounces

  • brushes luscious locks

  • "how much does that bottle hold?"
    "1 litre"
    "Sorry, what's that in archaic?"
"Oh, 1 pint, 2 gills, 5 fluid ounces, and a teaspoon"

    Seems much simpler, really.

  • Stuff should have to be

We'll have to agree to disagree there. You're welcome to pick your trading partners based on which units they are willing to use, but it's not the government's business to dictate.

  • I wasted about 20 mins of my life filling that in

I would just like to point out that it doesn't take that long if you aren't going into as much venty detail as this!

  • "Oh, 1 pint, 3 gills, and a teaspoon"

    FTFY. In English, 1 Gill = 5fl.oz.

In 'merkin measure, a litre is near enough a quart and a quarter cup.

  • but it's not the government's business to dictate.

I'm more than happy for them to dictate that everything should be in metric, because it makes everyone's lives easier to have a universal, sensible, comparable standard that practically everyone understands and is the same as our major international trading partners, it makes perfect sense, it doesn't mean people can't also use the stupid measurements for the next 40 years until 99% of people who understood them are dead and then it's just a case of using a conversion app when needing old manuals or textbooks or conversing with anyone who's re-established contact from whatever remains of what used to be the USA.

  • Except that’s a pretty shitty position for a consumer to be in if those ‘trading partners’ are the main places you can buy stuff.

There’s a reason we have consumer protection - because it makes it harder for people to get mugged off by shops and businesses. Standardising measures is a part of that, and seems pretty reasonable that it would be something the government can dictate.

  • I'm more than happy for them to dictate

If SI units were as ideal as you pretend, they wouldn't have to. Imperial measure will be all but eliminated by market forces anyway, not just because SI has been the official language for more than half a century but because it is easier for business from both a technological and marketing point of view. Grams in particular are a boon to surreptitious shrinkflation.

None of that gives an excuse for a dictator to prosecute a farmer for selling spuds at the gate by the half cwt.

  • Oh agreed, I just fell into a rabbit hole of venting. At least 5 mins of which was trying to figure out if there was any actual link between fluid ounces and (non-fluid) ounces.
