  • Can anyone recommend shirts similar to alpkit woodsmoke? Pop stud, long sleeve & some sweat/ smell tolerant fabric are what I'm after.

  • Bought a SRAM bb30 crank locally over the weekend

    Which crank did you buy?

I hate to say it, but if the crank is for bb30, the axle might not be long enough to fit through the shell and the bsa30 bb cups!

The axles on bb30 cranks tend to be quite short since the bearings sit inside a bb30 shell.
I had an 11 speed sram red bb30 crankset and the axle was very short meaning it could only be used with a bb30 bb.

The bsa30 bb's are meant for 30mm axle cranks that tend to have longer axles on mtbs

  • Sram bb30 are mostly not true bb30 though so it's probably fine

Edit: yeah there are some that are though, as you discovered

Take off the preload adjuster from the axle fully to get maximum axle length btw

  • Yeah I think the 11 speed red I had was a particularly short example.

How does taking the preload adjuster work? Is the idea that once it’s installed it will be snug enough to not have to bother with preload?

  • Oh shit.
The Rival crank I got didn't come with a preload adjuster and all the attached gubbins and I figured it worked in the same way as GXP/htII cranks without one.
I have a wavey washer spare from a htII to GXP conversion set that I could use to get it sorted anyway.
When it arrives I'll just get to measuring and if it doesn't work send it all back and get a GXP set.
Ahh, the joys of different bicycle standards...

  • Yeah it's either snug enough or you whack a wavey washer in, I can't remember entirely. Been a few years since I did it

  • Thinking about it the wavey washer I have probably is too small for 30mm axle.
    Shit again.
    Better hope it's snug
    Snigger

  • wavey washer

Ah yeah of course. I now mind hearing this explained before

  • the axle might not be long enough

I think it's only the Red Exogram which is true BB30, the rest are 386Evo and use a variety of spacers to go in BB30 and Cervelo BBright frames

  • BB manufacturers tried to keep the cups within the restraints of fitting in a regular HT2

Stuffing a 30mm axle into the space allowed by the OG HT2/GXP/UT cup tool isn't really any worse than putting a 24mm axle in the newer "small tool" HT2 cups, or for that matter a 22mm Octalink or ISIS axle and bearings inside a 1.37" threaded shell. There are several reasons why using full size BB30 bearings is slightly better, but none of the above was terminally horrible.

  • Ah I didn’t know this. The Red exogram crank is the only bb30 sram crank I’ve owned.
I guess it was done to make the red crank as light as possible.

Soz Rodolfo, I’ve maybe caused unnecessary anxiety, just ignore me

  • Suspension fork question: I have a Fox Float 32mm FIT RLC fork that measures 506mm A2C and just under 120mm of fork stanchion with no sag/weight on them. Is this a 120 or 100mm fork? Is the travel measured with sag or without?

It’s an older fork so can’t find the info online.

  • measured without sag, but stanchion length =/= travel length.

Remove all the air, put a loose ziptie on a stanchion and compress fully, tighten the ziptie a little and measure from seal to ziptie for travel.
    sounds like 100mm though

  • Are lower level BB’s and loose bb hubs usually overtightened at the factory? Even UN55 and 300, which seem good value low/mid level parts, seem to ‘clunk’ instead of rotating smoothly, even after a few minutes of loosening the grease.

Dhb do a shirt like this, which is surprisingly good. I wear mine more than I thought I would. Only £40 too.

  • I've got some trainers where bits of the rubber sole are coming off on the sides.

What's the best thing to stick this back? Should I buy some of that shoe goo or is there stuff that's cheaper/I'll have at home that would do as well?

  • No worries, got some more info that is really helpful!

  • or is there stuff that's cheaper/I'll have at home that would do as well?

Two part epoxy, the rapid stuff, as it is more flexible than the traditional stuff

get some from poundland for surprisingly £1

  • Thanks, maybe one for the Xmas list.
