  • Just got a new washing machine and have a realisation that I have no understanding of how plumbing works. So dumb question ahead.

The drain hose from the back of the machine is going out into the standpipe, am I meant to attach the hose to the hook on the back of the machine so the hose sits higher than the drum to ensure all the waste water flushes out? A bit of string in the pic for an example of what I mean. Or is it meant to hang down freely?

Feel like there’s remnants of advice in my memory somewhere to make sure you do something so water doesn’t siphon back into the machine.

    Teach me LFGSS!

  • Hooks are mostly just for guiding the pipe and making sure it doesn't crush/kink behind the machine. Your manual will tell you how much higher than the outlet waste water can be pumped but it's probably higher than you think.
