  • this is all assuming your filter doesn't have flat sides that fit a socket. mine for example, fits a 14 sided 65mm socket designed for oil filters, such as this:

    https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/BK_7769010

ive seen the screwdriver thing shred a filter making it even harder to get off. i would not do that.

take the time and money to get a universal (strap) tool, if it can fit.

if the space is too tight, find one of these that fits.... i've never used one of these, and i think they are usually used for filters that have flat sides, but i'd try it before whacking a screwdriver through it.

  • Can you whack a screwdriver through it?

Don't do this until absolutely every other avenue is exhausted.

I feel for you tho. The previous owner of my bike did the filter up too tight and it was an absolute sod to remove.

A good first tool-less option is to get a pair of gloves then reverse wrap a load of masking tape around the filter tightly and grab hold and turn hard with two hands.

  • The filter deformed? That's incredible.

its only supposed to be 10 ft lbs or something.

some say hand tight plus a half turn or so with a tool.

  • Am I your ex's dad? Ah I'm not from Pescara ;)

In the mid 90s no one wanted the step throughs especially as the no suspension or hard tail ones. Every one wanted the modern scooters.

  • Ah, the lovely clee hills used to love pointless driving around there.

  • What bike?

As hugo7 has said screwdriver is a final way. Issue can be that the filter can still tear and and you are left with a bit of the filter attached.

  • Only used frost for the POR15 tank lining kits.

Have used the products. Am a fan of this stuff https://bilthamber.com/product/hydrate-80/ to convert rusty metal then https://bilthamber.com/product/epoxy-mastic/ Both UK made. Prefer the 2 part stuff over body schutz as have had bad experience, poorly applied on poorly preped areas.

Lots of people say lanolin products, but you do need to reapply every couple of years.

  • I was having trouble with my car oil filter earlier this year and used a leather belt, it worked really well.

  • I thought it was seat(?) it then + ¼ turn. (Or torque to the factory.... Etc. Obvs)

But yeah it was fucking brutal, and that was my last shot before taking it to the garage. Made sure as I got it going to do the forward, back, forward, back method of unscrewing stuck bolts.

I didn't have any luck with the car belt strap removers, but I think a lot of what works may depend on the location. HD's had theirs on the side don't they? So there you'd have space. But on the bonniville it's underneath in between the frame rails.

  • How does this happen? I've gone down another rabbit hole about Yamaha TRX 850 race bikes, I'm not in the market for another project but these look great fun.

  • Friend of mine raced one of those in the KRC endurance series.

  • Ah TDM mk2, shit carbs and worse heads for valve seal issues.

Borrowed a friends TRX that had been lightly modified with flatsides and modded valve guides and seals. Then improved suspension turned it very fun bike.

  • There's a lot of bikes use the B4368 these days, usually going too fast to look at the view and rarely making it up into the hills. I can only assume desperation to escape the West Midlands conurbation combined with a strong need for a bacon sandwich at Tuffins?

I'm sure it used to be more interesting - going back twenty years or more, Jim Reynolds used to organize the Borders Classic Bike Show at Cleobury Mortimer, and the visitors bike park alone was worth a visit.

  • Wow, thank you everyone who responded. As I'm not the most patient person in the world I've decided to take the quickest/easiest route and gave a @jambon's leather belt technique a try. And it worked a charm! Now, I've fill it up to the upper limit mark and am anxious if it's not too much and how much damage could it cause? Probably not, as it's still within the limit, but just.

@bright I was considering getting a dedicated tool, but my new oil filter has a 17 mm nut integrated so I'd use it only this once to remove the old filter. I was also worried about it slipping because of cheap/imperfect fit.

@hugo7 I'll be following your footsteps very soon, as brake fluid will be due next year and I'm going to give it a go as well!

    @lynx it's a Monster 796 I'm working on.

  • Next up: changing timing belts and rear brake lever!

  • Made it home after 4 days on the GWT.

No eyes were lost to bungees, and no big injuries were obtained. One slight lean-and-fall by the SA beast on his 990, otherwise we kept it upright.

Takeaways from this are that Trackers are absolute dogshit at 15psi on anything other than mud.

Loose stone climbs it was just keep on the power and ignore the lack of grip. On gravel and anything small and loose, it was…. Keep on the power and ignore the lack of grip.

  • Sorry to derail, what keyboard is that?

  • I’ve moved on to ROK straps. So so much better.

  • Dead cool. Another Yamaha that was way ahead of it’s time. I had a mate with one and had a few good rides on it. Aside from a tendency to go straight on the brakes, it was a fun ride. The Over racing stuff is the absolute BB.

  • “Keep on power and ignore lack of grip”

    • This is the way.
  • Keychron K3 Ultra-slim with Keychron browns.

    https://www.keychron.com/collections/keychron-uk-iso-keyboards/products/keychron-k3-ultra-slim-wireless-mechanical-keyboard-uk-iso-layout-version-2?variant=39441686364249

I really like it. Good VFM. I use F-Keys so find it a great layout. Battery life isn't amazing is the only downside. Have actually ordered a K4 to try out as I sort of miss a number pad, but am a bit nervous of the height, whereas the ultra slim is the same as a normal keyboard.

  • If you need help wonder over to ukmonster.org or ducatiupnorth they were the friendly monster groups. Looker in to checking the valve clearances yet?

  • Did you get a go on Zanxs bike?

  • Another showing the lanes that were too tight to stand
