this is all assuming your filter doesn't have flat sides that fit a socket. mine for example, fits a 14 sided 65mm socket designed for oil filters, such as this:
ive seen the screwdriver thing shred a filter making it even harder to get off. i would not do that.
take the time and money to get a universal (strap) tool, if it can fit.
if the space is too tight, find one of these that fits.... i've never used one of these, and i think they are usually used for filters that have flat sides, but i'd try it before whacking a screwdriver through it.
